I
would feel obligated to write more and faster, and the problem is it's not something I'm capable of. I have my own pace, my own time, and readers would just have to accept that. I think most readers do accept when an author has to take a break or slow down. You'll get one or two voracious fans that might hound your profile for days and post for updates, and it can really add to the pressure.
Don't let it. if your story or book suddenly starts trending widely enough, mission accomplished, as far as I'm concerned. I don't think that popularity will wan at all, and you'll just attract more new readers anyway - even if you lose the diehards who were pining for your continuation. As long as people know you're alive and kicking, that's most important, I think. Treat your profile as a personal blog, I say. It's there, and even if you don't write anything else right away, or update something, at least people know "Hey, I'm here!".
A LOT of authors, I've found, aren't doing that, and I'm dropping them if they haven't responded in over a year. You want people to respect you? Respect them by letting them know you're okay.
