Is anyone else addicted to the Ranking?

Hi, I’m a relatively new author who has been posting for almost a year.

Basically, I’m addicted to the ranking by genre and find myself checking it daily, calculating how many more views or days it will take to rank up, and researching the competition to see whether I can overtake those above me and when. It's unhealthy, to say the least, since I end up wasting almost an hour on it every day even though I know it won't change anytime soon. Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm also considering ranking genres based on how low their top positions are and then writing a story that hits all of them just so I can have a top-ranked story. Anyone else? Or is it just me?

I'm also addicted to checking my stats... not so much the genre ranking but I really like to watch the number of views and readers go up, especially after posting a new chapter. Idk how to stop

I mean I enjoy the fact that I’m #1 in both pathfinder and Warcraft fanfiction. But that’s mostly because I write in relatively niche fandoms and actually continue stories past 10-15 chapters of setup.

I try not to read into it too much.

It's nice to know... I check it maybe once every two to three months. However, it's kinda stupid and silly to obsess over it, as the only thing that matters for the list is VIEWS.
Doesn't matter if your story is great or has a 2.0 rating. Doesn't matter if 90% dropped it.
Also, you can just make up your own tags, and since your story is the only one with that tag, you'll always be at the top spot.

Right, views matter, but how do you know whether your story is doing well for a given number of views? You find out by comparing it with other stories on the site. Would just any story work for comparison? No, you would want to compare it to those in the same genre. That is why the ranking by genre on the statistics page is the most practical way to judge a story’s performance based on views.

Also, how do you feel when you see other new stories overtake yours? How did they do it? Is their update frequency better? Is their story simply better? Do they have fewer words but more chapters? It is fascinating stuff. You can even predict when you might reach a certain rank by comparing the stats, which I find kind of fun.

hmm... I usually go by the number of favourites they give me to know how well I am doing.

???? I meant the only thing that matters for the ranking is views.

So a 4.9 / 5 story with 100 ratings and 10 Reviews that has 100 chapters and 100k views is WAY below a story that has 3.1 with 10 ratings, 1 review, but 1000 chapters and 200k views.

So, despite being ranked much worse, with much fewer fans, the inferior story is placed way above the great story, simply because it has 10x the other stories' chapters.

So the ranking says nothing about QUALITY.

Honestly, my story is a prime example of INSANE views, for a pretty mediocre story, which is why it's placed extremely high in some very competitive and popular tags.

Favorites depend entirely on the person reading. They are like unicorns that occasionally grace a random story with their presence once in a blue moon. Rarely do they actually mean someone liked that particular chapter. Also, like views, they can be inflated by having more chapters with fewer words.

I guess the rankings do change depending on other aspects but the ones in your own statistics are usually based on views.

Aw... don't beat yourself up like that. The fact that your "mediocre" story is getting views means that people like it despite its quality. The story must be top notch.

It’s also easier to get a high ranking with low views if you’re using unpopular tags. For example my story only has 1k views and is rank 24 in Senpai-Kouhai relationship, meanwhile its rank 459 in Doting love Interests

That is true. However, the thing is, the more popular the tag, the more people check it out. I get a lot of readers who check out the Harry Potter, One Piece, and Naruto tags, for example.
The difference between a rank 1 from a tag nobody bothers with, or a rank 12 from a popular tag, is insane.

It's why I'm considering writing a story with all the unpopular tags. This way, I get to be the top-ranked story on it. lol

I don't even know what kind of story that would be, but wouldn't that be interesting in and of itself?

I used to be rank #6 in the superhero tag. Not because my story has a lot of views, but I just so happened to add the story right after the tag was added, so I had no competition. Now It doesn't even show my ranking in the superhero tag.

I am ranked #83 in gangs though.

Tag rankings are important only if we care about accessibility for new readers. However, for me, what matters isn't being number one in a specific tag, but being on the first page of the tag page. This means being at least 25th to be on the first page. Why?

Because new readers will be able to find your fiction immediately on the first page. So, being ranked 1st or 25th in the tag rankings makes no functional difference.

Therefore, rather than obsessing over being number one in the tag rankings, I care more about how many tags place my fiction on the first page (ranks 1-25). So, that more new readers can more easily find my fiction.

I was generally more amused by the stuff I managed to rank in - sometimes I have no clue how I wound up in that category.

Yeah I also am addicted to the ranking. I'm just trying to get into the top 100.
