Sometimes it’s not the antagonist that’s terrifying — it’s the MC’s own way of thinking.
A calm, logical, ruthless, or disturbingly patient mindset can feel far scarier than any villain speech.
Which main character’s mindset made you think:
“Yeah… this person is dangerous.”
Curious what others think.

My MC once said that she would have just planet hopped since her grandma is the goddess of creation if she just doesn't have great attachment to her queendom, making her go to lenghts in order to save the world. It's quite normal and cliche, but a person who only takes up responsibility because she and a handful of people can benefit from it is quite terrifying if scaled in the real world

But it still can't be called pure evil.

FMC possesses an extreme duality. In her daughter's eyes, she is the best mother, gentle and loving. In the eyes of the villagers, she is just a normal young mother.

However, in the eyes of the old world, she is a bloody executioner feared by tyrants, considered a monster and a brutal terrorist.

After all, FMC was a retired forme savior who had ended the age of tyranny. But, she won't hesitate to punish the world once again if they dare touch her daughter.

Imagine a mother who wouldn't hesitate to destroy the world (tyranny) just to protect her daughter's innocent smile. FMC is that type of protagonist. This chapter explains just how terrifying FMC's side is:

It is not scary per se, but how cold 李安平 from The Man Standing on Top of the Food Chain became once he noticed he couldn't win an enemy without leveling up.

So he ended up slaughtering all the civilians and allies to devour their souls, citing the line to the horrified folks "you would have died anyway, might as well help me."

Same vibe with Kang Hansoo in Reincarnator, where MC killed everyone who got left behind in order to level up further.

If you put their ruthless thinkings into modern literature, there might be more readers who would shake their heads at the behaviour.

My MC has a ruthless streak that was only tempered by his deceased wife and his old broken body... I am actually about to write about him going on a bloody rampage

Trevor Philips from GTA V. Psychotic, violent, and unhinged. Spend one day with him, and you might not survive.

Steve from minecraft.
a man you can kill, but for some reason keeps coming back.
can carry the entire world in his pocket
enslaves entire villages to work endlessly for him
slaughters millions of animals
runs trial chambers for FUN
literally opens the portal to hell
opens the portal to THE END of time
fights off literal nightmares with ease
and annihilates the last dragon to ever exist without batting an eye.

Steve is a cold hearted bastard with a soul of ice who does things simply because he CAN.

Worst of all. He has billions of friends who can do the same.
-because minecraft is an online game

Actually, I'm gonna add Yami Yugi to this list. The man basically controlled demons from the depths of the most evil humans, enslaved them into stone tablets, forced them to fight, and if he didn't like someone, instead of just beating them up like a normal protagonist, he literally crushed their mind and sent them to hell. People can call it the shadow realm all they want, in the original, it was just death.

Paperback series. "Parker". He always impressed me. I mean, he's smart, capable, efficient, resourceful. He's a cold blooded ruthless killer. But, he has a code of honor, and he won't harm an innocent person. It would *suck* to have him after you. One of my main characters in my own writing, he's got that in him. A rapist escapes justice, the victim won;t prosecute? Yeah. Found him in a dark parking lot, alone, beat him to almost death and dropped a picture of the victim on him so the MPs knew what it was for. Later on, he beat a guy to death with his bare hands, taking revenge for a crime victim. I write him, as the nicest guy you'd ever wanna meet. but he has a line you don't cross.

that character, I went above and beyond for the one revenge. I'll just say, he killed the one guy quick, but the other more at fault? A quick death was too good for him. He went positively diabolical.
