For both cases, the protags are always the talented and noble one (the underlined) while their competition is fantastically inept.

Then when both the underlined members meet, they always never bite each other's face off because "goodness"

Kind of retarded for me, but when I got introed another KR "MC turned villainous" story, all I can think of is

"Yup, totally expected."

I mean, the whole "your lifework getting stolen by bastards above and wife getting raped and then committed suicide" is par for the course and can be set in medieval, low or high fantasy, and modern day drama.
