Have you guys ever had a really good idea for a story that you didn't pursue/expand on?

Plenty of ideas that I think are really good but aren't necessarily good...

Like a sci-fi/fantasy story that was a cross between Pandorum and LKH's writings cause...

But yeah, I have plenty WIPs that I plan out in Plottr but never do anything with. It lets me get my brain worms out so I can actually focus on the stuff I should be writing.

If I don’t count the random ideas that sometimes pop into my head ones I just play around with mentally and then drop then I have one solid idea and a few chapters written.
It’s a story about a guy who starts developing abilities. I wanted to explore the idea that some of us might be descendants of Atlanteans, superhumans.

I lack creativity and write generic stuffs so I will get invested and later find it hard to gather the motivation to write. I’ll just drop it and see if I will remember it years later and expand on it. But unlike others, I have time.

Yeah, I did, but I didn't have the chops to continue writing it back then.

This morning I had an idea for what I believed would be a very interesting story, but it was on a topic that would make me upset. I decided not to risk raising my blood pressure over it and dropped the idea. Pathetic as that sounds, I wonder if any other authors dropped a story idea they felt had potential, and why they did so.
I just write a few paragraphs down as a quick summary and keep it in my future books list. I have about five that seem really fun that I plan to get around to as soon as I finish my current stories.

Less a specific book of hers and more the concept of the Supernatural she was using. Its been a long time since I read any of them so I'll go with 1-3 because the protagonist hadn't become godlike at that point.

I did, quite recently in fact. I think there are times that, no matter how good the idea sounds in your imagination, it´s better if it stays there and never sees the light of day. Because I also think, if the premise (or whatever it´s in the story) upsets you, do you want to risk the chance to upset the readers as well?
And I still believe one can write almost anything, if it´s with respect. But there is always a thin line and not everyone would understand. So yes, sometimes it´s better to go write the easy thing and leave these kind of projects to someone else (or to no one at all)

Ah, more specifically, along these lines, I was working on a novella called "Hunter's Moon" - each chapter was told in first person by a different character in the cast, and some of them even included that character's death scene. But each character wound up being darker than the last and I had to step away for a bit... then the computer crashed and all files were lost, about 2/3 of the way through the story.

I have a ton of ideas in a file I have for keep track. I have not expanded on most of them, yet.

I have occasionally dropped off an idea in a thread on a related topic, if it's not an idea that is too tightly bound to my world and would be a minimum of five years before I *might* start working on it. That way other people have the opportunity to work with it if they like it.

Yeah, I have. That is why I never continued my first story (Not promoting myself, I swear) I had a very good idea but I realized I didn't have the skills necessary to pull it off, and I would ruin it if I pursued it. That is why I am writing my current story. In a sense, it is some sort of sequel but the reason I decided to write this new story and develop it is to improve my skills. After I am done with this story, I intend to expand upon the original idea.

I have ADHD. So most of the time I don't even have time to write an interesting idea until a new pops up.

For example(short) I had this idea after reading Solo leveling type manwa where gate clearing and things happen.
What if after clearing a tower/gate rather than just disappearing they just flush out everything in them like at the speed of bullet everything inside becomes a paste.

So if you don't clear a gate soon you will have uncountable number of mobs to fight if you clear a gate/tower you will have to be prepared to be bombarded with everything that gate/tower had.

The only way to slow down is for a certain number of hunter to be present in the tower/gate, it doesn't matter the rank of their well being as long as they are "hunters" it will do. But even this had a side effect—monster in tower will become stronger and stronger the longer you slow it down. If hunters are present in the tower then the monster will be "forced" to act like game monsters having specific fight patterns and "area of presence".

There was more such as government secretly kidnapping weak hunters and make them live in hard to clear towers, organisation trying to evolve weak tower/gates to higher ranks.

There is also tower ranks— Common>Normal>Rare>Special>Mythic>Legend
Common are just your regular gates(in this setting) but their frequency is highest and they can be "harvested" before clearing.

Normal, gates after clearing don't leave anything and you also can't take anything out of them, their danger level upgrades super fast.

Rare gates can only be cleared after killing the boss every clearer gets a curse and blessing (always miss balanced in the favour of curse, especially "Heart or Righteous", a curse that makes the cursed believe everything they do is right.)

Special, a rank given to many types of gates)towers they can un-clrearable, Unhabitaed, have a fully functioning human habitable city(these will force people in them to work), a simple unbreakable building, a micro-verse etc.

Mythic, can only be cleared solo, clearing these tower let's the clearer make one wish, any wish literally without any catch. (That's how in this setting the hunter system came to existence)

Legend, places that became gates/tower after "The Gatefall"(term for the existence of thowers) such as seven wonders, renowned old places, historical sites. Only those with "special titles" related to them can enter. Basically seven deadly sins, different lords, different masters, coloured etc.

Did I cover everything I don't know?
The plot will be too big, if someone wants they can.

It seems incredibly common among creative types. Some degree of autism also seems frequent (usually Asperger's Syndrome)...
I have the former, but, by all accounts "am not smart enough" to have the latter.
Just updated my message letting you know.

all the time. I used to write in high school, and I would need to borrow the left hand of half the nation to count how many I've dropped. Most were fairly decent. I just don't have time to write as much as my brain would want me to. Even if I sat down and devoted 24/7 to writing, I likely couldn't keep up, sadly.

all my awesome ideas are being worked on, but that doesnt mean its fast. I tend to cram several ideas into one story to have a reasonable chance of getting to them. I used to be more like you, avoiding ideas that would upset me, but I eventually decided that true art must come frst and to make something worthwhile I need to not hold back. So my stories tend to go to some dark places, now.
