Some people see it as their divine or natural duty to spread their genes as far and wide as possible. I have an uncle with that mindset, and had over a dozen children with two women.

In modern societies where the children stay in the home most of the time and go to school with children the same age as themselves, they don't have many opportunities to teach younger children. Thus, mixed-age play can be extremely beneficial.

People want children because it's the average biological imperative.
I say average because not everyone responds to their biological imperative the same way.

Same. Oldest of two boys. As I got older, I wanted a younger sister, but my mom was too old and too tired.

In my case, I made a lot of childhood mistakes that helped me learn. My brother didn't since he preferred to play it safe after seeing me. So, I have more diverse life experiences, ergo more intelligence.
