I think trends die out as fast as they appear. While a lot of readers were craving an isekai'd villain/extra/side character, it inevitably got to a point where the market was oversaturated, and suddenly, there's nothing else but that trope. Of course, I believe it's still somewhat persisting in webnovel, but it's slowly dying out.

I think the question is, what will be the next trend?

More likely it was a bandwagon thing that everyone jumped on after a few really took off, and now it's down to a "normal" level (I have two - one I haven't released anywhere, and one that is the most popular story I have on this site, myself, and know of at least two others that are being worked on but have not been released to the public).

It's more anime and manga set-up ...

The MMO market (and interest) is bigger in the East than it is in the West...

There are a number of the popular titles out there, and there is an incentive to make more, while in the West MMO is mostly in decline.

Both in the West and the East, there is a market for escapist fiction, an isekai basically, but the idea of the MMO doesn't resonate with the West that much anymore as, honestly, how many people still play those?

Not to mention, Western readers don't like the whole otaku protagonist idea either, hence no reason to create the "reincarnate in the game you played setup". It does happen, but rarely, as in the western Isekai (and harem) likes their Gary Stu being Gary Stu before being Isekaid.
