Hi, guys! I have a question for everyone who has a Patreon. What kind of content should I do, exactly? I ask because I’m genuinely curious about how these things work, and also because I want to be fair.

Should I do extra stories, lewd or otherwise? Should I commission art for my characters? Or should I just rely on general support?

What do you guys think?

Put whatever you want as long as you follow their rules. Yup! Read those nifty rules of patreon before uploading. As for contents> Mostly, advance chapters or images. And from my experience, readers don't like when you keep something extra behind a paywall, like side stories only for patreons or segs for patreon only. Things like that make readers drop your work and some even complain because they are missing out on things from the main story. Well, good luck.

Sounds like you are at the same point I am with mine. Toying with setting up some tiers and such but really still in the planning stage right now.

As Xcalibur said, read the rules and follow them. also, be aware that Patreon likes to control not just whats on their site, but anything linked, however remotely, to or from their site. If you have a story here that would violate their rules, they could still shut down your page. This is why a lot of people are abandoning patreon in favor of SubscribeStar.

also, don't put "extras" there, unless you already have a large following. to start, advance chapters and maybe commissioned artwork. For my page, I do AI artwork (trained and genned by me, on a variety of different artists so it's not outright stealing their style). Any that are decent, I touch up and post behind the paywall. Any that are good but not quite there, I post for free on my X. So there is a benefit to paying, but you're not left entirely out of the loop if you don't.

Y'know, I've heard writing lewd fanfics on AO3 and then starting a Patreon that allows a number of monthly commissions based on tiers is actually INSANELY fast and WAY more effective than trying to earn from writing a webserial. If earning is your priority, I suggest looking at those options. If not, just offer a $5 tier and then give 20 advance chapters. That's the most common monetization method, but unless you have a large following already, it's pretty slow and not explosive at all.
