Need Help Crafting A Magical Girl Story

Even though I’m a dude, I’m fairly certain that I understand why ‘Magical Girls’ were appealing to girls (rather than guys who can sometimes be unable to escape seeing the girls as the opposite sex). Shoujo had its particular trend.

Affected by the romance ideas found in novels aimed at teens and young women, but kinda more skewed towards the fantasy rather than the ‘realism’ of a scenario. If it could evoke a particular emotion, then everything was fine.

I won’t go into a diatribe in what I believe the ideas behind the magical girl genre were. I’m no expert and some may disagree with my takes on certain things. What I actually need help for is crafting the magical girl story.

What I got as the base idea is this—

Draft Title: ‘The Protector Or The Protected’

Details: Girl who is aspired to be a rapper and is pretty tomboyish sees a priest wearing a mascot bear mask shooting someone. She is then threatened at gun point in assisting this man as a ‘Magical Girl’ to fight off Apparitions.

The weakest of them look like regular people.

She initially is hesitant, but the mascot assures her that the job is easy and she will only work as a support to someone else. That person will protect her with his life. He introduces to her his ‘son’, who he treats like a human weapon.

After going back to her normal life and meeting that young man again, she tries to think about whether this was okay. After all, although the bear mask priest said these Apparitions were dangerous… The man himself was suspicious.

Moreover, he said the serum given to her would irreversibly change her body. It’d make living a normal life and achieving her dreams nearly impossible. This was her thought until she’d encountered a roaming apparition on her own.

Forced to take the serum to survive, her eyes are irreversibly changed to be cat-like. Even after transforming back out of her ‘Magical Girl’ form, it does not disappear. She can only wear sunglasses at school in order to hide them.

This also making it harder to recognise her (as her magical girl form has a mouth mask).

The story is about the platonic friendship between her and this unknown guy that had transferred to her school as soon as she chose to be his ‘support’. Exorcising apparitions and gaining allies. Along with fighting villains.

Hook: Subversion of the Magical Girl’s role in battle (her abilities being purely gentle and working off Care Bear logic). A very platonic friendship between the main duo, who end up finding their separate love interests later on.

Kinda like a buddy cop but one isn’t a dude.

Right now I’m working on what kind of important characters I want to add to the story and need ideas on archetypes. Female lead is the first recruited, and the reason for the title is the question of who of them is the one being ‘protected’. She unravels his tragic backstory.

Unlike many, the first Magical Girl anime I watched was Tokyo Mew Mew (thus the main character being Spider-Man in how she has to hide her powers while trying to live ‘normally’).

I could pull up some inspiration from there like baddies who aren’t irredeemable (except maybe the Final Boss). Giving her love interest unholy power that is both a blessing and a curse. Making him clash with friend and foe.

Other than that I don’t really watch much Magical Girl anime, so I’m unaware of any deeper tropes or things I should look out for while writing. Would be tremendously grateful to anyone who has any ideas about this.

A protector of magical girls reminded me of this https://www.novelupdates.com/series/magical-girls-hero/
Except, it's gender bender, and the mc has actually turned into a girl too = his original form is now a girl + the added magical girl filter to be unrecognizable after transformation.
I originally thought to add that trope but decided to play the Magical Girl aspect straight. Thought it would be more fun if there is still the chance of being recognised by friend or family.

A lot of super hero tropes can overlap here. As an example:

Tbh, I never stopped to think what the 'point' of Magical Girls was. The only thing I can think of is giving someone stereotypically helpless the ability to directly affect the world, strong feminism vibes, right? ... Which is kinda the opposite of your only support role allowed.

I'm not really sure what you're looking for here, though. You could try watching a bunch of magical girl shows to get an idea of the genre you're writing in.

I like this premise. A tomboyish magical girl and a suspicious looking bear mask guy. :blob_aww:

That part about her having a mask is a nice detail. I always assumed people couldn’t recognize magical girls because of some unexplained magical phenomenon.

The only archetypes I can think of are a familiar and an evil magical girl.

Unrelated, but I often think of magical girls as frilly, anime-ish adaptations of witches and fairy godmothers.

The reason why the mc was chosen as a magical girl in the first place, the one I referenced with, is that once a girl transforms back within a crowd of people, her filter is gone forever. And its his job to make people forget about these magical girls, because these girls are not the same in strength, so the weak ones who lost a fight gets hospitalized and then harassed to the point of almost suicide. There was also a government made to protect magical girls and their freedom because some countries literally use them for WAR, lol.

Anyway, his parents basically got brainwashed to think he was a girl at the very beginning too.
