sometimes it's because they want to write BL but 'writing bl is gay' so they make it genderbender futa.

other times, they want GL but also want hardcore het smut but dont want to do bisexual stuff so they make genderbender futa.

I mean... it might be able to be used in a trans story in which the character doesn't have bottom dysphoria.
But really, it generally is used to draw in more people. I don't read smut but I don't expect there to be much critical writing on the subject matter.

To me it is quite simple.

To have the deniability of being a pretty female as well as having the benefit of having a throbbing penis.

Personally I thought being a femboy is good enough to maintain the best of both worlds but apparently only when one is a hermaphrodite then it can be consider "true" having the cake and eat it.

Let's be honest, if someone actually feels awkward about making decisions like that, then they're a much better option for writing it than someone who didn't care at all.

The entire point of gender bender (more the movement overall, but also the genre to some degree) is figuring out how someone would navigate that kind of situation. There are tons of stories that plain got it wrong, and some of those stories are unbelievably popular.

Having more perspectives is always better. Even if there's one that can be considered wrong, then it can be used as an example to say, "Don't do it like that".
