(Me when paywall)

For context I had stumbled upon this translated korean novel, brand new with like 2 chapters. Read it, liked it and have been reading the new releases ever since. Today I was excited to see what the 6th chapter was but a fucking paywall just blocked my ass from reading a bunch of new chapters (7 whole chapters). It'd be one thing if they paywalled me at like, 50 chapters cause at least by then I'd be like kinda satisfied, but paywalling me at 5 CHAPTERS is crazy. And I'm a broke ass highschooler, I just can't be spending money on them coins or whatever bs currency they want me to buy. I know I'm sounding pretty unreasonable cause like translators ain't doing ts for free and it takes a lot of time but come on, 5 chapters is all I get? I've seen sites give me 100+ CHAPTERS so I know it's possible.

Now I have to sit here and hope that for every new chapter that comes out, a paywalled chapter becomes free cause I want to know what happens in the story.

Thanks for reading whoever stumbles upon this, also fuck you webonvel can't even get 30 chapters on a 1000+ chapter novel.

That is petty and unreasonable. However, so is paywalling a work when you don't have the author's explicit permission. Monetizing a translation—even if it relies on voluntary donations—is a controversial choice.

Eh, don't read translated novels on WebNovel. Most of the ones they get are already available in half a dozen other places without any paywalls. If you're going to read on WebNovel don't ever buy coins, just read free stories or nothing. Most of the contracts for the authors are predatory and the way they do business is also predatory. Like, once you buy coins you can't do the dailies to get free chapters anymore and they tend to raise the price out of nowhere, so it's really just not worth it. Worst of all, authors can have their books taken away and given to someone else to finish it or lose their IP so they can never publish under than author name again outside of their site when they sign a contract with them.
