I have a question for people who know about psychology/psychiatry.

Hello!

I have been having auditory and visual hallucinations for about four or five months.

I see moving shadows when everything is at its brightest possible.

I hear the sounds of walking and running from the roof of the house, while the house is one story and there is no way to go to the roof. (The sounds belong to something heavy like a human, not a cat)

And worst of all, sometimes I hear a family member calling me and after I answer, I remember that I am alone at home.

Since my condition is getting worse, I was thinking of going to a psychologist or a psychiatrist, but I am a little worried that my condition will be diagnosed as very severe and I will be admitted to a mental hospital.

So, now that I have explained my situation, I wanted to ask if I will be admitted to a mental hospital with this condition? I don't think so myself, but since I'm not in a position where hospitalization is an acceptable option, I don't want to take the slightest chance.

ps1:Don't scare me with nonsense like ghosts, I am a man of science.

ps2:Sorry if there are many problems in the writing, my English is not good at all.

I'm no expert or have any proper knowledge on psychology or psychiatry, but it could potentially be a form of psychosis.
From what little I know of it, you can get auditory and visual hallucinations at times.

It could be something else entirely, though.
Perhaps seek out professional advice.

They would not admit you to a mental hospital for hallucinations unless it were for your safety or the safety of others, but there is no shame in being admitted as an in-patient. The more honest you are with doctors, the swifter your recovery. Go to a doctor first, as it might be something as simple as diet. Nobody on the forums will be able to diagnose anything for you.

You really should just check with a doctor, you won't be put into a mental yard against your will unless you're showing signs of endangering others or yourself. Or in case its something really really severe.

Have you checked the carbon monoxide levels in your house?
That usually comes with other more straightforward symptoms (like headaches and nausea), still worth checking however.

Well it's definitely something like a psychotic disorder, I would guess schizophrenia but you said not enough symptoms to be sure. If it's a problem in your life go to a psychiatrist.

I asked my question in several different places and to different people (including psychologists and psychiatrists). I just wanted to compare different answers.
Also, since this year I am preparing for the university entrance exam and my sister's wedding is coming up, being admitted to a mental hospital can ruin a lot of things.

People tend to act like going to a mental hospital is the worst thing on God's green earth.

No, the worst thing would be for you to leave it untreated, and then it morphs into where you kill someone or yourself, or otherwise get hurt. Maybe that's the worst case possible but still. A mental hospital can only help you, there are so many cases where people are delayed or refused help because of fear of the 'nuthouse' like it's prison. Please get any help possible for yourself and others.

I don't think this is the best place to ask this question, since it's gonna depend a lot on your location. Unless it gets worse, there should be no problems the likes of landing in a mental hospital, since you don't seem to be a danger to anyone including yourself. As I said though, it's gonna depend on the place and to a smaller degree whoever is diagnosing you, so I can't say anything for sure.

Also, personally I think going to a psychiatrist isn't gonna help in the long run, unless you want to be on some meds for the rest of your life. Who knows, maybe you'll find one that really wants to help, but the more likely scenario is you're gonna get some drugs for psychosis and hallucinations and they'll tell you to come back again if symptoms show up again or if it stops helping. Good short term remedy, but doesn't solve the issue.

Conditions like these should have a cause, and finding that is what a good psychologist can help with. And everyone's probably gonna tell you to seek that help, because it can get worse. It may not, but if it does it's not gonna be pretty.

You're being haunted by a ghost. Just douse your fists with holy water and punch everything around the house.
Ok, I want to kill this guy. I hope that no one will associate it with my problems...

Ok, I just checked the symptoms of schizophrenia and it seems to be very similar to mine...
Should I be worried?

If it hinders your life, then you should go see the professional. Don't worry. They're not gonna lock you up or anything. Just go seek professional help or advice.
It's just a little annoying. But I am afraid that it will get worse.

It depends on your country.

However, if you’re not experiencing suicidal ideations, or homicidal ideations, you could probably avoid admission.

unless you’re doing drugs or substances of any kind, you should try to find a psychiatrist, who can prescribe medication over a psychologist who can only do counseling.

I don’t think counseling will help with these symptoms, the important thing is you’re still in control of your behavior and it doesn’t seem like you’re having big mood swings. If you take the right medication (that is if you’re able to find something that works) the voices shouldn’t bother you.

However, I’ll be upfront on this.
Whether or not you’re admitted to a hospital is probably highly dependent on the psychiatrist and their way of doing things. Every DOCTOR has their own way of practicing, and many of them do not want liability in case something goes wrong.

I do think the benefits out way the negatives in your situation though, unless you’re really completely fine with the hallucinations.

When did it start? And how?

Don't look for a diagnosis online. Even if some of your symptoms match, it does not mean you have the condition. Nobody here can diagnose you with anything, and you likely will not get an accurate diagnosis online. There are too many things that a psychiatrist needs to know before they diagnose you with something. Also, we armchair psychologists don't have any of your personal information that is NEEDED for a diagnosis. Please don't accept a diagnosis from random people on the internet.

Hallucinations---auditory and visual---are a symptom of schizophrenia, but there are more illnesses than just that which can cause it.

My recommendation (for legal reasons, I am not a doctor do not take anything I say as true) is to see a doctor or therapist. Talking to a therapist WILL NOT HELP YOUR CONDITION, but they can help guide you. Seeing a doctor is ideal as they have the power to help you, whether it be through prescribing medicine or suggesting therapy. Still, don't go jumping into therapy without consulting a doctor, which is contradicting myself, but also not. Basically, see a doctor, maybe a therapist.

There are multiple psychiatric diagnosis that can cause auditory hallucinations.

Even depression, if severe enough can cause it.

The only good thing is that you can live your life still with meds. You won’t be dying from mental illness, and there are places to be treated, unless you’re in a third world country.

The biggest consideration you’d have to take into account is if you want to have children, since a lot of these can be passed to kids.
Also, mental illness doesn’t make you stupid. Some of the most brilliant composers have bipolar disorder. Elon musk is autistic… etc
