Why does it feel like every media has to have romance?

The moment two characters interact people think that means they want to jump in bed and stay for hours.

What happened to the Bond of Friendship?
What do you mean by what happened?
I don't recall things being any different in the past. Granted I am in my thirties and maybe you are talking about a time before I was born.

Cus writing a good platonic friendship between two characters is harder than just shoving some pre-made romance subplot template into the story. Romance is just a shorthand for 'bonding' in most media nowadays, cus most people tend to fantasize about a good love story rather than some friendship bonding story.

It is also one of the easiest ways to show emotion/care of the old, classical Action Hero type of character (80-90 Hollywood), and that troupe just never dies.

Dammit I want to be super close buddies with my entire party in Baldur’s Gate but they all misinterpret that as romantic overtures and get pissy at one another. Not to mention that most of them are golems made entirely out of red flags.

While I can't speak for others, I can speak for myself. and quite simply, I write fantasy erotica. when it comes to erotica, would you rather have lovers making love, or lovers just banging out a quickie? while a friendship bond with benefits can be fun, it's hardly realistic in the sense of long term "until the end of the story" smut.

It’s… always been this way. Romance has always been a go-to, be it in the minds of the creators and in the minds of the consumers. And on top of that, in the minds of the managers and big-shots too, what with their desire for profit.

The Bond of Friendship has never disappeared. You have just assumed that the popular shipping culture that covers digital front pages is a sign of changing times. There will always be people with a diversity of opinions. And a lot of times, people just do romance for shits and giggles, entertainment of selves, or hope for the future.

Romance is something that never gets old. People always love each other and will continue to do so until they die out.

Well I agree and I guess people like to see couples more than friends?

I think there are two main reasons here.

First, it's easier. There's a ton of material for writing romance, and most people know more or less what it entails, even if it ends up as the most generic romance you can find. Writing any non-romantic relationships is harder because there's very little tropes and established culture to follow, and relationships like that generally have significantly different dynamics from the typical romantic ones.

Second, romance sells, broadly speaking. A huge majority of people will enjoy a good romance, and while similarly many people will enjoy any platonic relationship in a story, it won't have the same feeling to it unless written really well. There's strong feelings involved in romance, and people are drawn to those.

There's a reason why tragedies, action stories, and thrillers are more popular than pure slice of life, and there are a lot of similarities between that comparison and romantic/non-romantic relationships.

I dunno how to feel about the shipping culture...On the one hand, it is fun and humorous to see what is depicted as non-platonic as romantic, but also, I have seen a number of Wu Kong x Pigsy, or Cao Cao x Guan Yu from the more modern readers the classic... Like, WHY?

Because people grew up. Because when people get older bonds of friendship aren't what most people are searching for. A 40 year old man trying to find friends is strange, but a 40 year old man trying to find romance is acceptable.

For games and media they probably assume that most of us have friends. Baldurs gate probably assumes you have at least one friend, but they'd bet against you having a gf.
