Cliches are plot points in stories that make the story progression predictable for the reader. You can see what going to happen next, and often proved right.
These plot points are used, recycled, and repacked so much that you come across them more than often.
List cliches both which you like and which you dislike.

I dislike BDSM.

Not because of porno, but because of how poorly done it is .

Best part is that out of the 100 plus chapters, only 3 or 4 chapters have the scene.

Like, is this consider misusing tags?

  • I like all cliches when they are executed well and make the story enjoyable.
  • I hate all cliches when they are badly executed, and the author uses them only because he/she thinks that he/she must hit these points to write in the chosen genre.
Cliches are not bad if they are surrounded by interesting characters and plot. They become bad when the cliche is propped up by cardboard cutouts of people-like beings and their sole purpose is to lead from one cliche to another.

"The character isn't strong, but isn't weak either."

"The character is strong, but not strong enough to bla-bla-bla"

"Although the character isn't that powerful, it's not that weak either."

What shitty way of describing. It's just too wishy washy and not clear or concise way of telling. The author is clearly isn't good at describing power and ability comparison to the world. Might as well make it vague.

"I'm not goin to win, but I'm not going to lose either"
"So you won't join the competition then ?"

Just say he's medium high or medium low or something.

They are smart people.

(Also TenderHuman, I teleported a chocolate devouring apple in your general area. Please note, it will also explode.)

Or cultivation. Or system and cultivation.
It's only natural for persons with avid gaming background or specific reading interests (i. e. xianxia). Still... Really good game literature, even based, for example, on D&D (series about Dark Elf by Robert Salvatore, Dragonlance series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman) never ever describe most of the game elements (levels, attributes, etc.) and when they do, then definitely not with numbers. Even descriptions of game elements that can't be avoided (casting specific spells, etc.) still are made differently from how most players usually do it during game sessions. That's what makes reading them so enjoyable. And shifts their sugnifficance from supplemental game litterature to valid fantasy novels, that can stand alone on their own right.

Cultivation is okay. Especially considering the potential of the setting. System doesn't have any potential. System is a worse version of other tropes or cliches.

I don't get why LitRPG is so popular. I find that systems in novels become more and more restrictive to an author's story as the story progresses. It is like making a Vietcong trap in the jungle and then stepping into it willingly.

I don't get it either, but LitRPG is not as bad as system on its own.
