Computers are one hell of a headache. And I need some serious help with one.

Computers. Everyone has used a computer before, some people have extremely surface level knowledge of computers, and others know quite a lot about them. But the one thing that everyone agrees on is...

Computers are complete headaches to deal with.

Seriously, they are like children, they would be like "I have a problem!" Then when you go over to see what the problem is, or what is causing it. The computer literally refuses to elaborate further. Then you are forced to rummage through while trying to find out the cause of your problem, and all of that while hoping that you won't break anything.

I just wanted to rant about how frustrating dealing with computers are. Since lately, I bought a used gaming laptop. Nothing top of the line but it is pretty good, a Dell inspiron 7577 to be exact. Found it at a decent price too. But let me tell you about the biggest problem here. Oh my god.

The computer runs basically everything perfectly, except, for roblox and splitgate. For those two games, the laptop will run the game nicely for like half an hour, then suddenly, the computer will just get a black screen. The computer isn't turned off though, because I can still hear the fan, but the computer becomes completely unresponsive, and the sound of the game vanishes, it's like if the power was suddenly cut on it.

Problem is though, other games seem to run well, Nioh runs at 60fps on high settings and stays on for hours without causing that problem. Dark souls is the same, terraria also never had a problem, so why does it happen to splitgate and roblox out of all of the games?

I literally had no clue what to do about this, and so I searched on google the symptoms of my computer, then I see a bunch of solutions for that problem, things like "turn off sleep settings" "update drivers" "run chkdsk" yadda yadda yadda. But what is important here, is that none of them worked, yep, zero of these solutions worked, and the computer continue to shut off at these two games.

Now I was getting extremely worried, I was terrified that the computer was about to die or something, all the updates that I've downloaded have done nothing, and I still had the same problem. So I started thinking that it wasn't a software issue, and that it was a hardware one. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call the worst possible scenario. So I decide to run some tests on the gpu to see if it works or not, I run the gpu throughout several graphic tests, and it passes all of them without any graphical glitches or the screen going black again.

Now, I am not a tech savvy dude alright? But I tested it in every way my peanut brain can think of, and yet it still continues to act like that. One of my uncles told me that the gpu was damaged and that I should give the laptop back while I still have warranty, but since I live in Africa, getting pc parts is especially difficult, so it is kinda hard to let the 1060 6gb go when basically every other option was worse. And now I am stuck.

And here we are, I still have absolutely no idea what is causing the black screens, and I still don't know why it happens on splitgate and roblox only, but I did see that it happened only to shooter games though. So that is at least a little bit of progress.

But yeah, this post is basically me asking anyone here with technical knowledge to help me with my problem, also a bit of a rant and a story I guess. I do know that this is a writing website and that I should be asking in tech support forums if I want more help, but I am getting desperate, and I have already asked in every other forum for tech.

Oh yeah, guess I should give the specs if anyone figured anything out.

Its probably temp. Laptops are notorious for this kind of shit.
Download this, start up your games, leave it for a couple of minutes, and check it.

I don't even get that much out of my baby. He just cries, and I have to figure out if he's hungry or wants my nipple or he's bored or he wants to use the potty, or whatever.

Meh. Those are shitty games anyway. Solution? Stop playing them.

Agreed, very likely is temp. The games could be more cpu heavy than gpu heavy or something. Too lazy to actually check though.

Just checked for roblox and it says Roblox doesn't use the GPU to do rendering calculations, they use your CPU. So I’d expect it might be heavier on CPU than dark souls for you.

If it isn’t overheating though, you might want to check on your power supply, it could be your laptop isn’t getting enough power. The power supply itself can also potentially overheat leading to a dip in the power it can supply. Regulation internally in the power supply, it may limit the current its supplying over time to decrease its temperature.

A power issue might explain what you’re experiencing as well. Your system would probably detect it doesn’t have the current required to keep all its components operating at a safe level so it disables them to avoid them operating at a current that could damage them. The display is quite demanding in terms of current so I’d expect it’d be the first choice to shut off. I don’t know how demanding the internal speakers are, but they’re probably enough that the computer would deem it unnecessary and disable it too if there is a lack of power.

You mentioned you live in Africa as well, I can only imagine it’d be quite hot where you are so overheating and power supply concerns is really the prime suspect.

Oh yeah, one more thing to consider is where you got your laptop and where your power supply is from. If for example you bought them online and they came from overseas it can cause some complications. Different countries have different standards. For example in South Africa the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz while everywhere in North America, the standard voltage is 120 V with a standard frequency of 60 Hz. It could force your power supply to work harder than if you were at a location with a different power system as it has to regulate more power leading to heating up further, thus lowering how much current it feeds to your laptop as it is trying to keep its temperature within an acceptable range.

By the way, how bright do you keep your display? If you’re not on minimum display brightness, that might be one thing you might want to consider doing if you haven’t already and see if it increases the length of time you get with the monitor remaining on during gameplay.

To see if it’s a power supply issue, this might be one way to test it if you don’t have a means to monitor the current being fed by the supply. Check how long you get on max display brightness vs minimum display brightness when playing the same game doing the exact same thing, be sure to keep the two tests as close to the same conditions as possible. Also, time how fast the supply heats up to about the same temperature when it shuts off if it is heating up in both cases.
