Have the developers considered adding the feature for users to form public and private groups?

There could public groups managed by the moderators and administrators for the various genres; fantasy, isekai etc.

Users could form other public and private groups with each other for various reasons, the most obvious one being a critique group.

You could also create motivational groups such as:
  • 100 Words a day
  • 250 Words a day
  • 500 Words a day
  • 1000 Words a day etc
So the users could form sub communities where their colleagues have similar work goals. Even better if the public groups a user is part of can be displayed optionally under their name/avatar or within their signatures.

If implemented correctly the userbase would have more reasons to engage and interact with the website and be encouraged to form friendships and write (or procrastinate ;) ) more.

XenForo seems to have an add on called Social Groups that looks like it has all the required features.

What does the community (and the devs) think of this idea?

While it is very useful, it sounds way too much work for a free site like SH.

But there is discord, that should satisfy you

Too much work in what respect? The work to integrate this already developed plugin is almost certainly less that many of the other features that have already been implemented. At least, from my own experience this is the case.

Discord is a thing, but discord is off-site and from a community and business perspective you want to encourage people to spend as much time on-site as possible.

They did this in Royal Road. It turned the whole site into a den of elitists and abusive assholes that pretty much demanded all authors to be good enough for traditional publishing or leave the site to escape the abuse.

It really wouldn't be worth the effort unless that plugin works on the main site, which I think it's only for forums. Only like, a couple dozen people use this part of the site and that's easily less than 1% of total userbase.
