I have a sort of idea of what it is, but those are vague feelings and not words.

It is like the storeroom in your house, full of the essential stuff from toilet paper to shower gels, but it is often kept hidden from prying visitors.

Or like the legend in a map.

If you have a bazillion different characters, you can write notes for each one. That way readers who return to your novel after some time can get caught back up and remember who each character was. Also items, locations, etc.

I've also seen authors post artwork of their characters there. I'm not sure how often readers check glossaries since some authors make whole glossary chapters at the start of their novel.

Pretty much. Like the definition of glossary, it's basically a place for defining specific stuff relevant to a book. Neat feature here imo

There used to be an incident that resulted in wasted space in the storeroom.

Rule of thumb, no one likes wet tp.

Used for defining the terms you use inside your novel for example, items, names or titles etc.
I use mine to put maps hehe... if only I could draw better, I'll put character image and profile in there.
