What is the most unusual but grounded martial art you've created and\or used in a novel?

I think even those who don't appreciate martial arts, or know about them, can appreciate capoeira. It looks fun, it's a mix of dancing and martial art, it's like nothing else in the world, or so my meager knowledge of martial arts tells me. However, the world of fiction allows us to make something even crazier and more fun.

We can look at gun-kata or gun fu, a mixture of kung fu and guns, only idiots care about how unrealistic it is, we care about how cool it looks(it slaps). What about hip-hop kido that black mighty morphin used in the first season of power rangers? A mixture of hip-hop moves and karate? That's sick as hell! Lastly there is Samurai Champloo with Mugen using a lot of crazy moves.

So, the question is in the title. What kind of crazy but somewhat grounded martial art you've created or used in a novel, or maybe left in notes? Mixture of waltz and boxing? Maybe you decided to combine Kyūdō, traditional Japanese archery martial art and parkour? Share your inventions.

Guess that doesn't count, but in my fantasy stories, there are beings with liquid bodies. They can send a wave from one point of their body to the other side, and accelerate it continuously till it reaches the contact point, which basically sends out a kinetic shock that sends most opponents flying. That might not be the kind of realistic act that is asked for here, but I put in a lot of background thought about the attack, especially in the exact application.

Close enough. ?‍♂️ Thank you for submission anyway.

Since many of my characters are soldiers, they all have formal hand-to-hand combat training. I'm a martial artist, so I try to input my own knowledge whenever I can.

I could write an essay detailing the traditional fighting styles that many of my characters use. Instead, I'd rather talk about Valerie Star, a woman (albeit a tall one) who fights using brute force and a few WWE moves. Her fighting style is very static without a lot of bouncing around, not something that's typically associated with women. Think Tom Hardy as Bane or Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan Noonien Singh. I also wanted to show that my universe had disconnected the associations between strength, beauty, and gender. In wartime, being strong became an important part of life, regardless of gender or sexuality.

When I was writing how she fights, I avoided creating a style like Black Widow's or Yor Forger's that focuses on agility and takedowns. It didn't seem realistic for someone with super strength to train those skills when she throw grown men like rag dolls. Later on, I also realized I unintentionally ended up satirizing the "strong female character" trope by making a literally strong female character. But her fights are the most fun to write, so it is what it is.

I once wanted to have MC learn the skill called Mountain Ape Sword Technique with the Mountain Ape Sword.

Which is just Gut's Dragon Slayer but girthier.

Also the MC is tiny and frail, so he's going to get carried by his weapon most of the time.

But since MC is also learning Swallow Dance, a nimble footwork that teaches the user to move erratically around the opponent/s. MC incorporate both moves by him doing an olympic hammer throw first along with him like Thor, then proceeded to dance around the sword that is three times his height and a 100 times his weight.

So if the initial mass weapon fails to kill the opponent, MC will follow up with a dagger to windpipe.

Also, when the sword is in momentum, MC could easily change the weapon's trajectory as soon as both his feet touches the ground. Meaning MC could turn a thrust into a spinning slash or even holding the blade part of the weapon and wield it like a surfboard.

No offence, I don't find it unique when compared to stuff like gun kata. I mean the martial art itself. The way you use it is more unique, but that's not the point of the thread, sorry.

Sounds interesting.

Yeah, I was feeling preachy today. My bad for being derivative.

Umm... then how about an alien claw-based martial art that includes teleporting and short-distance flight? Or a two-person maneuver that involves using a whip to hang someone? That unique enough for you?

Mc in my story is a pixie/sprite type fairy. Her martial art uses a thin needle like sword, and focuses almost entirely on flying around faster than an arrow, and stabbing people directly in the neck/spine/eyes to instantly kill or disable them.

Nah, I get it. There isn't a lot of people that talk about actual martial arts. I mean, just look at this thread! Barely any responses here. At the same time, if you make one about magic, oh boy, it will be swarmed. So I get your desire to share it, just... wrong time and place. ?‍♂️

Honestly, reminds me of Breaker. There wasn't any aliens, but there were footwork techniques that were akin to a short-distance teleportation, while claws were substituted with punches and kicks imbued with qi\ki\chi. Is it unique enough for me? 50-50.
Or a two-person maneuver that involves using a whip to hang someone?
Honestly, I have trouble visualising it. :blob_dizzy:

That's less of a martial art and more of a... tactic? Sounds fun though.
It was.

But the execution was worse than Eliseo J. Mares because the power system and how to obtain it is shoddy.

One needs to find the spirit weapon out in the wilds.
You can always recycle it into something more manageable.

Oh oh oh!

Is it like both of them each grab the end of the rope and garrote the dude in the middle?

I would.

Actually planned to have my current MC get the Mountain Ape Sword.

Also, the full name is supposed to be Mountain Moving Monkey (搬山猿) Sword. Said chinese name is actually copied from Unsheathed with the moves from Return of Condor Heroes' Nimoxing's Elephant Toss.

Baji Quan! I love that style, and it gets far too little representation outside of Virtua Fighter (Akira), Dead or Alive (Kokoro) and the 2013 movie The Grandmaster.

The martial artist character in my main series uses that style. Full body tackles and explosive elbow strikes for the win.

As for my other stories, I have used Choi Kwang Do in on. CKD's main appeal is fluid movements, making it easier on the joints.

And I created a custom one called Clutchtalon Axe fighting style in the more recent one. This one is inspired by Perrin from Wheel of Time and how he sees himself as a wolf and his axe as his claw.

Nivi learned a messy, scrappy way to use her axe in which she holds it really close to the head, also creating the image she is shredding things bare-handed.

Pretty much. I also did something similar where a smaller fighter wraps a chain around a larger one's neck and does a triple-cartwheel to tighten it to a similar effect. Ironically, her main fighting style was influenced by dirty tactics for street fighting and capoeira (the martial art that inspired this post)

Ngl, an armored vest and a motorcycle helmet will make this ineffective.

Not if you are fast as bullet and more durable than adamantium.

Dammit, I do miss the Breaker and his Full Body Barrier.

Also, the chinese kungfu name 铁山靠 is only common in the first half of the CNs most of the times, because it is just smacking someone with your shoulder. Still cool though.
