Usually in wuxia or what ever the name is, when there is "soul damage" the character, either dies or turn... evil, monsters or both.
In the modern medicine and biology you coul interpretate that as DNA damage.
Kind of makes sense since the origin of the self is the "soul" and the origin of life is DNA.
Why do radiation cause cancer? well it damages the DNA making the cell mutate into an "inmortal" uncontroled, fast growing, destrutive unit, a monster that not only consume a lot of resourses but also break to all the barriers and organ limitations to spread through the body destroying everything in its way.
Same happens with viruses, they implant their genetic material into the cell causing it to "mutate" over time since the new genetical material doesnt have the self correcting mechanism normal cells have (it is a bit more complex than that, but lets make it simple), that is why for example leucemia and some blood tumors are related to epstein bar and citomegalovirus virus tipes. Or cervix cancer, throath cancer and others are related to papiloma virus (VPH).
Also if you get a too high dose of radiation too fast... well you die, you basically melt away and fall apart (kind of).

Souls can't be damaged in my setting. They're immortal and invulnerable. The only thing that can really negatively affect a soul is if they get consumed by chaos, but even that doesn't really damage them so much as stop them from properly interacting with reality. (That could be considered a form of Spirit damage, I suppose.) Once the chaos is removed, they go back to normal.

Yeah I am doing Worth the Candle style where physical damage can be translated to soul, a sort of reverse Mahito.

I use soul because I want to show psychic damage but it also affects the physical.

Like how a human soul/ mind representative/ god-I-hate-how-CN-cultivation-made-me-deal-with-all-this-BS should look humanoid and damages can be done to it.

I would say life force (how long you will live). So getting blasted by a normal attack can heal over time, but a soul attack can not because it is something that will damage how long you have to live on earth. You could translate this to diseases as well. Perhaps if someone takes too much soul damage they get symptoms like alzheimers where they "lose themself." There body might be alive but their is no one home.

A cultivation novel might not translate very well for this since once someone goes to the next stage their life is usually extended. However, it could also be worse. What if this damage to your soul affects your ability to pass tribulations and breakthroughs? Plus you always see in cultivation stories of old monsters rushing to get resources because their life is ending, so who would want to fight someone who could make that end come faster.

The term "soul" has many definitions...

If we're talking about the body one's mind instinctively creates when away from its previous body, there could be 2 ways to damage it:
1. By training your own mind in such a way that whenever the mind of the enemy forms a body, your own mind adds a wound to it.
2. By retraining the mind of the enemy to change the program it uses to decide the shape of the body it makes so that body is always created with a wound.
Such damage might even affect one's mind's ability to interact with its biological body. And as long as none of the opponents are gods, training the mind might involve a ritual that looks like a ghost fight.

If we're talking about the deepest part of one's mind. Then, damaging it can be done in a similar way, but the ritual would look different.

If we're talking about consciousness, then, while damaging consciousness might be impossible, a consciousness on its own, without a mind, after losing every quality, isn't really a being.

Basically it's a perception, and how strayed from the ideal you are the more soulless you become. Soul damage is just symbolism here lmao.

These are two examples just how you can make that soul damage be a soul damage. You can also make that when the soul is damaged, let's say in an arm, it makes that arm unusable even though the body is fine. Or the soul is damaged when identity is damaged, tie it to the mind, again, to perception. There's a lot of things you can think up when you categorize this stuff into two.

As part of my world building, I decided that souls are a thing born of sufficiently complex/sapient minds.

Life produces spiritual energy, and any living thing has a certain amount of spiritual energy around it. Complex life develops more complex spiritual patterns, and it is here that chi and mana can be developed and used, even before sapience has developed.

As a mind develops toward full sapience, its spiritual patterns become denser and stronger, and eventually a full soul forms at the center of the spirit. Souls are incredibly hard to truly damage in most circumstances, and generally requires stripping away the protection of any other spiritual energy first.

Now, about spiritual damage. Damaging the spirit weakens the body, even if it leaves no wounds. But this is not a simple vulnerability, for spirit is also what strengthens the body. Whether you are a mage able to summon a rain of meteors, a swordsman cutting through stone and steel with ease, or a cultivator surrounding their body with lightning and moving just as fast, it is through their spirit that their powers are developed. While those who focus on physical power will have more resilient bodies, even the most bookish of mages who has reached the heights of power is basically immune to, say, a teenage would-be-mugger's knife.

For the soul itself, you have to go out of your way to damage a soul, and you pretty much have to kill the person first. It's also incredibly short sighted if you are trying to gather power. Not only does this draw the attention and ire of all the gods, but 'eating' a soul is a burst of power, rather than sustained growth of power. Now, *capturing* a soul and leaving it unharmed, but containing it inside of your spirit, bound to your soul; that the way to really grow in power.

Souls draw spiritual energy to them. Having two souls in a body increases the amount of spiritual energy that person has, giving them greater reservoirs of mana, chi, stamina, and so on. It does little to affect how powerful a lightning bolt you cast is, but it will let you cast more of them. And having more spiritual energy available lets one push oneself for longer and against stronger opponents, increasing how fast you can develop your strength.

Of course, it takes a certain minimum amount of strength in order to be able to bind another soul to yours, and for those who follow such a path, it becomes a bit of a feedback loop.

This is still (usually) considered one of the few true sins by the gods, but it is a minor and potentially forgivable sin compared to the act of damaging or destroying a soul.

Soul in my definition is the residuals created by the mind and body. Damaging the soul is damaging these residual information. It's similar to damaging the grime and grease that you peeled off from a bath. It does nothing to the being.
