What are your opinions on the way that dragon newts are written in fantasy novels?

I agree, their feet are also at the right level of weirdness.

Unsurprisingly, Tensura does it best. But usually, when it works well, just think lizard man with a little extra dragon. Hopefully a breath weapon, and maybe even the ability to do partial transformations, like buffing up scales or claws temporarily.

The only one I remember distinctly is from Tensura; that one was pretty good, though a bit too humanized without concern for realism.

The only one (that was specifically called a dragon newt) I know of is from Monster Musume.

I have seen plenty of dragon born and dragon kin though.
