Context: There is an object that someone in the family want to have.

I asked, "how much?"

Person said, "5,000 dollars or 1,000,000 points."

I asked again, "points?"

Person replied, "for every 1 dollar spent, you can earn 100 points. Once you amass 1,000,000 points, you can exchange for item."

I asked, "but 1,000,000 points means 10,000 dollars spent?!"

Person lied, "yes, but all the money spent is on things we need." We most certainly do not need those things.

Of course, I asked if it is possible to use points to offset the 5,000 dollars, to which I was given the rate of 1,000 points can offset 2 dollars. So yes, you need a total of 2,500,000 points to offset the total 5,000 dollars. But if you use point exchange, you only need 1,000,000 points.

I was pinching my nose bridge at this point.

I've always been annoyed at people who claim violence is never the answer. Far more problems have been solved WITH violence historically, than without.
In this case, chairs needed to be thrown, and maybe a desk or two flipped. I had to read this more than once because I kept thinking that perhaps I was missing something...but no. This is EXACTLY as dumb as it sounds.

Nah bro, don't get mad.

I had already ran out of that and there is no way other than bankrupting them to stop the plan.

So I just stopped trying to make sense to them and watch.

I would buy it direct from somewhere else, because places that have "loyalty" systems like that are normaly charging you more in the first places.

depends. what the item is? whether it could be found cheaper elsewhere? is there any sort of time criticalness to acquisition?

judging from what info you have given, sounds like direct buy is the best option as the things to buy to earn points dont sound like necessary items. if it was points accrued through, say for example, grocery shopping then the exchange for points would probably be more worthwhile in the long term. but if it's buying stuff that isnt needed then it's not worth it to build up points

I would say that there is no other place that sell the exact same item, but yeah, similar items are sold elsewhere.
Can you sell the things you bought though?
See, if you can sell some of those things then you can come away with a profit.
No.
What kind of runaway capitalist family are we talking about here?
Just a stupid rant that I had with my family. It got somewhat resolved with me giving up as usual.

Turns out, if you used to giving up, even your spine will disappear and then the folks will get to call you a new insult.

Do the points ever expire? Will you get points for buying the $5,000 thing? Why not buy the $5,000 thing, and then you'll have a lot of points to spend on other crap?

Also, I have a budget for things I want but don't need, and it's less than half that yearly, and I spend a lot of it on gifts for the child or craft supplies.

I do that but in supermarkets.

Neat part is, the points I saved up can be turned into real money, which I add to my bank account every December.
