I had never seen the 3-plus hour long Richard Donner cut and it was really quite interesting. Laced with a lot more humor and comic book fluff, the film actually made a lot more sense in some areas; most notably, especially why the two nuclear missiles were sent to different places, Lois Lane's insistence on being in California at the time of the disaster, Jimmy Olsen's true position with the Daily Planet and struggling to become someone, Lex Luthor's hilarious and much darker undertones. (including one scene in which Tessmocker is about to be fed by some unseen beasts for her betrayal before Superman intervenes).

Everything just really worked, and Christopher Reeve was as handsome and kind as ever. There were such stories of him off-set also (included in commentary) such as the incident where the wires snapped during a shoot, and he and Lois would have fallen to their deaths, had the safety harnesses not held. He reportedly grabbed Margot Kidder and a pole at the same time in true "Superman" fashion. Another time, Reeve, donning the Superman outfit walked along the lot to the joy of hundreds of staff - and an hour later, walked around as Clark Kent, and no one acknowledged him at all. That's how they knew the "disguise" worked.

So, give it a peek, if you have the means. To me, Superman 1978 is still one of the top superhero films of all time, and it would pave the way for every single superhero film that followed. ?
