When I say modern fantasy, I think of films like 'Onward' or that netflix movie known as 'Bright'

Urban Fantasy is hit or miss for me. Generally though I prefer when they keep out fantasy races, as I find it too distracting.
Speaking of bland, that Urban Fantasy anime that I watched before, 'Shakugan no Shana', is kinda bland until the end of the last season. The twist at the end got me interested, though it was short-lived.
I got bored with that show half way through the second season, don’t think I could make it till the end.

Absolutely understand you. What redeemed it for me was the ending. Besides, I rarely drop shows or novels unless it's too difficult for me to continue.

Bruh, my attention span is short. If you can't sell me the product at first few chapters, you will lose me.

And even if you can sell me the product initially, if the quality drops, I might still patronize you for a bit until I can no longer tolerate it.

So the ending... brb I go find the spoiler.

I'd like em more if there was a bit more fantasy inside, but they can be pretty downright tolerable sometimes

I'm now having doubts about the definition of urban fantasy, because what you're talking about is categorized as such and I thought urban fantasy refers to stories where magic is introduced to the present world (Earth, no other races and other funky twists in plain sight). Both can be good, but they are often relying too much on the "fantasy" part, reducing the "urban" part to the background.

I write one, so I obviously like it. Although I haven't watched the shows you mentioned since mine is more of the Shakugan no Shana vein (since it got mentioned) or like Persona, etc.

It's not much of the "fantasy races living among men" type of setting.

I love the genre.

Think of all the cool urban fantasy stories.

Jhon Constantine.
Anita Blake Vampire hunter (fucker)
Lucifer
The wizards apprentice
The Darkness (comics)
Witchblade (comics not the anime)
Underworld
Supernatural
Bright
Any Lovecraftian story (although they blur the line between SciFi & Fantasy)
Any vampire story that has to do with magic & not a genetic illness
The Wolfman
The Craft
The Prophecy
The Picture of Dorian Grey
Penny Dreadful

The list goes on and on.

All these stories are/were very popular for a reason, so dont let these naysayers tell you that modern fantasy is a boring genre.
what makes a story boring is writing quality, not genre.
