Originally, my novel DECK was a graphic novel. But then, laziness hit me, and so I made it into a novel. However, I love creating volume covers in the middle of seminars, while the speaker is talking and I'm fighting boredom (I want my hands to be doing something while listening). So, here's are some of my works during those days...
Character Name: Henrietta Temaire Louise d'Anvilles (34th Hussars-French Army)
For this design, I wanted to give her the 'fashionable' uniforms of the 18th-19th century French Army. And since the hussars got the best designs (in my opinion), I patterned her design on their uniforms.
Character Name: Kotono Ran (7th Mages' Division-Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces)
I wanted to emphasize the character's femininity here, that's why it led to this design. I won't spoil much, but Ran is a dancer in the story...both traditional and modern.
Character Name: Elizabeth Ann Atkins (Royal Scots' Magicians Company-Royal Army)
I've always been looking to subvert the traditional tropes in literature, so I created a character that represented the British that hails from Scotland. For her design, I used the Gordon tartan, since the Atkins surname is closely related to the Gordon clan (according to my research). I also gave her the bagpipe as her wand, because why not?
Character Name: Numiho Lin (Mages' Force-People's Liberation Army)
Well, I initially planned to give Numiho's character a traditional Chinese Beiyang Army uniform, but ultimately decided against it. For one, I don't have a clear reference, and second, I think the cheongsam fits her more here. The greatsword (and wand) she wields was inspired by a Shang dynasty sword I saw before when I was researching for her background.
Character Name: Anastasia Dana Vasilisa (2nd Odessa Guards' Mages Brigade-Russian Ground Forces)
When I think of Russia, I think of cold weather and wolves (I don't know, it's supposed to be bears...but yeah, I do think that way). So I gave this character a baseball for her wand (an intended irony). She is also supposed to be a wolf-lady...with five tails when using her maximum powers.
Character Name: Camille Rogers (101st Airborne Mages' Division-US Army)
I purposefully took a famous US Army Division (the 101st Airborne 'Screaming Eagles') and converted it into a Mage one for her character design. Her wand is a dagger, and Camille Rogers is a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (having fought to kill terrorist mages there).
Character Name: Rosa Voss (148th Mages' Brigade-Bundeswehr)
She's actually a side character, but decided to give her own cover. I gave Rosa the stielhandgranate as her wand. Oh and, I did a typo in her image before. Thanks to @Assurbanipal_II for correcting me!

An extra character a student of mine requested...
Character Name: Stephie (11th Mage Infantry Division-Philippine Army)
Since she's a custom (requested) character, I haven't thought of any role for her...just yet. But doing her is the most challenging one in this group, especially when my student requested that her hair was rainbow-colored. Her wand is the Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum sniper rifle, by the way...
Just like my other artworks, I combined traditional and digital mediums to create these. Traditional mediums include pencil, paper, vinyl eraser, ruler, and graphic drawing pens (Uni Brand). For digital, I used a scanner (400 dpi and then reduced the resolution once done), Photoshop CS6 for colors and graphic pen tablet for coloring.
