What is considered as a "popular story"?
If something is popular to hate on, I don’t call it popular I call it infamous.Popular story can be one that is basically got noticed a lot of people.
i thought its positive and very well-liked too, but then i realize twilight is well-known but definitely not well-liked
So i guess depending on what type of popularity. Popularity because so good or popular to hate on.

Thank you, for allowing me to find out about such a work of art.Obviously your story is only popular if it can meet the quality standards of Invisible Dragon~
I'm not a fan, and the Internet loves to hate on Twilight, but considering the number of sales (100 million+) of the books and tickets for the movies, there is no metric I can think of by which it can't be described as well-liked.Popular story can be one that is basically got noticed a lot of people.

True. I only watch the movies and not in order nor all of the movies in the series so to me its a meh. But it is hugely popular to others too, probably what spurred that werewolf section on Wattpad and made werewolves like their own category in many webnovels when it should be within a genre...I'm not a fan, and the Internet loves to hate on Twilight, but considering the number of sales (100 million+) of the books and tickets for the movies, there is no metric I can think of by which it can't be described as well-liked.

True.If something is popular, it's something that has garnered favourable interest among the masses. Not to be confused with famous, which means that it garnered interest, whether it's positive or negative.
For stories in general to be popular, this means that you normally go somewhere down a middle road to gain a large target audience. You don't have to, but if your target audience is smaller, then you writing needs to also be significantly better.
Take the Harry Potter series for instance. VERY popular. But most people will likely feel that the story is lacking in something, which will be something different for every reader. But as it was by design made to fit as many readers as possible, so you don't hear a specific argument that takes over the conversation.
Compare then with Twilight. Also very popular. However, in comparison it gained some negativity. Why? Because it had a smaller target audience (which was still quite large, namely teen girls). But when the book gains much popularity for a large target audience, other audiences take notice. Which then will think poorly of it, as the book was not intended for them, and therefore have more resounding critizism. Within the target audience however? Popular indeed. Otherwise it wouldn't have been so successful.
