I vote for the reprise of No Man's Sky (2016) as one of the wonders of the gaming industry.

  • Half-Life 2 (For physics engine)
  • Warcraft 3 (For both tech and gameplay)
  • Skyrim (For sandbox and modding)
  • Mass Effect 2 (For RPG possibilities in a cinematic package)
  • Sims 3 (Life simulation with open freedom)
  • GTA 5 (Example of corporate greed combined with a good product. Just forget online.)
  • Minecraft (Duh.)
I tried to go for titles that changed or defined certain aspects of their respective genres, something that, because of these titles, we have games after them that kept improving and making it all better.

PS:

Also, I agree. NMS is a sample that should be praised and followed. It is indeed how to get back to the top after a fumble. That is why I no longer care about AAA. I don't trust shareholders and employee developers; I trust passionate developers who work for their own vision and for the sake of their dream.

It's almost a crime to forget TES IV: Oblivion Horse Armor. It was the breaking point for microtransactions and DLCs.

I wasn't going for the horrific ones; I thought we were talking about the positive ones.
Fair enough, your inclusion of GTA V threw me off. Oblivion is an overall good product, direct precursor to Skyrim, but that DLC threw the gates open wide for greed that grew out of control.

Oblivion was the start of dumbing down, release after release culminating in F4 and Shartfield.

Anyway, Oblivion was/is great especially for its time. I spent way too much time with it. But objectively, since Morrowind, Bethesda has constantly been losing its grasp on the term: RPG, system by system, and by now they no longer even know what the word means.

The final nail was hiring Veilguard’s writer for TES6.

Bethesda is done. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I did not play Morrowind long enough to judge it in this regard, but the dumbing down from Oblivion to Skyrim is clear as day, and remains probably my greates disapointment with the game. 8 attributes and 21 skills reduced to just three basic attributes and 18 skills, and everything clearly simplified, along with other mechanics.

And if they are hiring the writer of that mess for TES6, my already nonexistent excitement about the game drops even further.

Most of my suggestions are already quite old, but if you are looking for wonders of the early 21st century, I would dare to suggest:

Vietcong 1 (2003): The most realistic jungle in a video game thus far, and the most challenging and immersive FPS of its time. You had to evade boobytraps and navigate through the jungle with your map, call for artillery, and all, just reading the map like in real life. No in-game indicators or anything like that. If you play in the hardest difficulty, you might as well just graduate as an actual Green Beret.

Half-Life 2 (2004): Probably the most intense FPS of all time. The physics engine allows you to grab your enemies' grenades and toss them back at them, but not by "press F to throw back grenade" like in Call of Duty. You can literally look at the grenade, press E to grab it physically, point it in another direction, and press click to throw it. And that's not mentioning the Gravity Gun, which allows you to manipulate your environment and use mundane stuff as weapons. I haven't played a better shooter as of yet.

Doom 3 (2004): Probably one of the scariest games of its time. It is a departure from other Doom games since it is more of a horror game than its predecessors. Shadows and darkness engulf the place, and you never know what is around the corner or when a demon will teleport behind you. You are forced to put down your weapons and use your flashlight to see, and there are puzzles and passwords you have to solve to advance. It slows down the game considerably, but in a good way.

Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast (2002): The best Star Wars game ever. Period. Massive levels, countless enemies, and one of the most badass protagonists in the Star Wars universe. You have to regain your lost Jedi powers, solve puzzles, and defeat increasingly stronger enemies as the Dark Jedis try to bring back the remnants of the Empire. It has incredible lightsaber fights, including one of the most amazing fights in the franchise, fighting back to back with none other than Luke Skywalker himself.

Sonic Adventure 2 (2001): One of the best platform games of its era, and still a serious contender, even if you aren't into Sonic games. The gameplay is deep and grounded, and the controls are precise. It is a statement that it is still considered the best Sonic game up to this day, and all the following games have gone downhill ever since.

Halo 1 (2001): The beginning of the saga. Amazing FPS, fast-paced combat, immersive atmosphere, amazing characters, and a deep, engaging story with one of the most impressive twists in gaming. There is the Anniversary Edition with enhanced graphics, but the original still offers solid entertainment.

Silent Hill 3 (2003): One of the MOST terrific horror games of all time. There's not much to say. Just amazing. If you haven't played any of the Silent Hill games, this is a great one to start.

I would suggest something far more specific than just the name of some games.

One of my example is the not No man's sky itself but The reprise of No Man's Sky which is what truly worth noting.

I would suggest the Creation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 too. That thing is something to be marvelled at.
