I'm sorry if this is vague, and this is kind of a shot in the dark.
The novel was a sci-fi novel, the premise was a universe where humanity is prosperous but hasn't unlocked FTL travel yet. They have lightspeed teleportation though. An alien race appears with FTL and destroys most of the colony that the protagonist is on. The exception is the 'Icarus' station. They watch the aliens destroy the system, harvest stuff, most of the aliens leave, Icarus and the colonists are tired of waiting, then they fashion a railgun and destroy one of two remaining alien ships, the second leaves. They make some prototypes and eventually make an FTL capable ship that they use to get to Earth to warn the military. They kill the aliens. There's a line about messages from dead stars or dead colonies or smth in the book, before the FTL ship is made I think.
