How would you intergrate an chef in a "save the world" isekai

So, a little backstory first. I had this small idea pop up in my mind a few days ago—basically, a slice-of-life cooking isekai.

The premise is quite simple: A Demon King was born, and heroes were summoned. The MC was accidentally summoned along with them while he was on his way to work.

On Earth, he grew up poor and had to give up his dream of becoming a chef to pursue college. It worked—he landed a high-wage job—but he was never truly happy with his life.

And now, he finally has the chance to become what he always wanted. Since he isn’t one of the heroes, his destiny isn’t to save the world. As an apology for the accidental summoning, he receives some gold, which he uses to buy a small shop. His goal? To open a restaurant and follow his passion for cooking.

Any ideas? Or recs for me to read.

I can recommend two anime; Restaurant In Another World (if I remembered the title correctly) and Campfire Cooking In Another World. Both were pretty neat. The first one matches with your "chef in another world" part, and Campfire Cooking matches the "accidentally summoned" part. They might not be the greatest matches, but they might be able to help you gather some ideas.

The Wandering Inn is basically the story of a college student who loves chess and becomes an innkeeper in an Isekai world. I love it, but it's a slow burn and not for everyone. Lots of food eating scenes and moments, though.

I've considered "non-combat isekai". And it usually comes down to one basic thing: They either become evil or they find some loophole to become powerful, and the loophole is almost always related to their skill/class/job. One thing I'll point out is Rising of the Shield Hero - Shield is the weakest "weapon". But through some loophole, he turns a perfect defense into an unbeatable offense.

It has been done before, but I'll say this: Maybe because he wasn't a cook in THIS world, he doesn't have the "This is how to cook" restrictions we have. He'd be free to test and try, and play around to find the best recipes of THAT world. So maybe he ends up mixing what he learned in this world, applying it to the ingredients available there, and making the best food possible.

Or maybe the other world is all about basic cooking and flavor takes a backseat. So when he introduces methods of cooking to that world that maintain functionality while also increasing the flavor exponentially, he becomes world famous.

you have the option of going a world similar to the manga "toriko" where the cooking makes effects of ingrediens give more power.
he could be swept up in some kind of "prophecy" where they force him to train, but it is revealed how they cultivate power. maybe they need to eat very specific meats/nutrients to assimilate power. but the mc thinks this is boring. who wants to eat unseasoned food, every meal. so he makes something that he knows. and that harmonizes the flavors and gives a bigger effect. but this is the last thing he does before leaving. so when they finaly tries it. he has left and become anonymous. then you follow his journey as a chef.

maybe the first act is him cooking regular meals. then he becomes localy famous. and the start of the second arc is him being assasinated. but thoufh his food, he has gotten griends and some gadget/talisman that helps him not die. but now there is a plot for why he is being hunted. should he flee?
what we later learn is that how some of the ancient families and other hidden societies have kept their strength advantage was through "alchemy" and this has lead them to be scared that his "cooking" will spread. since it is maybe more about harmony in terms of flavour, and not like a recepie composition when you want to increase strenght. or maybe his cooking sooths the soul, and thereby training a side of the powercenters that traditional eating can't. they only gain physical atributes by eating in bulk. you'll figure it out.

Oh man - wish I knew the name of it; the second or third audionovel my wife got into had several large sections (well at least two) where cooking was important, both for one of the MCs and a support character. It actually did shape the story (by helping form and cement one alliance, and by almost triggering a war when one of the chefs accidentally hit a recipe identical to a "family secret" of one of the semi-villains). Think it had something to do with a Phoenix and a girl who regressed into her own life or some weirdness like that.
But never underestimate the power of food in diplomatic or romantic situations - even if there is no real "magic" or special ability beyond raw skill involved.

Give them skills that grant effects to the food they make. There's tons of games that do that so take your pick for inspiration. WoW, T&L, Ragnarok Online, Valheim, etc. There's tons of examples.
