I actually love weak protagonists because of the tension involved in any combat situation they’re in, and how exciting it is when they actually do something cool. And because they’re so weak they’re forced to rely on side characters for help, more times than not developing and making those side characters memorable. And the protagonist won’t usually get through their problems with brute force and instead have to use their head which I get pretty hyped about. I wonder what you guys think about them?

In terms of power, it doesn’t really matter. Use your special ability and troll the enemy or run away.

If it’s personality, they are insufferable and should burn

If they still win despite being physically disadvantaged(is that what you're trying to say?), they aren't weak to me. Intelligence is a strength after all. In fact, those types of characters are far more "overpowered" for me than any protag given big numbers by a system.

Also "weak" protagonists are more prone to plot armor(ex: Talentless Nana), so it can actually end up being worse than the standard strong hero.

I'm glad you asked since I'm currently writing a weak protagonist myself. If written well, it can be exciting to read how someone weak overcomes obstacles with wits and diplomacy. Calling someone "weak" is relative, however, especially in realistic settings when even the stereotypical nerdy teenager can knock out someone with the muscles of Dwaine "The Rock" Jonhson with the right tool and are almost always underestimated.

Hell yea man! The only downside really is that the author needs to use their brain real hard to make it feel real. High effort, but high reward. There’s also the rezero way of uzing social connections to pit your own powerhouses against the baddies.

I don't like the power of friendship.
what about the power of drugs?
I feel like weak protagonists are overrated. It just means that instead of winning in a manner consistent with the setting's logic, they win through plot armor and the author dumbing everyone else down.
well when you're a stone cold genius, winning does seem like plot armor to those of lesser intelligences
there ARE some really bullshit, know-it-all MCs tho.

Breaks suspension of disbelief.

As other people said, strategy and teamwork are just another type of strength. I do like that method, seeing people be clever is always fun. Although... Sometimes it feels weird that the Protagonist just suddenly turns into a genius chestmaster because they don't have any 'gimmick' they can rely on. Frankly, I'd rather see them lose than channel the spirit of Sherlock for a second of plot armor.

A genuinely weak protagonist, with no redeeming qualities, is only possible if you make them a 'side character' in another character's story. They are the sidekick of the hero, the narrator in a story with a different Protagonist. It's not a terrible gimmick, but it's probably really hard to pull off. Until the last second, Madoka Magica does that pretty well. Actually, I guess it's common in a lot of YA novels, just because the characters are usually children getting saved by their parents/guardians.

Oh, I meant like mind control and stuff. It's weird to me when authors give drugs magic powers. Hallucinations are weird, but believable.

Doesn't that just make most people (absurd harem included) in the story who follow the plot armored protagonist drug junkies?

Would be surprising, if power doesn't come off like a drug. Even more shocking, if that kind of power don't have a special magnetic scent for attracting troubles and disasters.

oh okay that makes sense. Well, some drugs have been used in certain experiments to do "brain washing" though.

Thats the thing tho, the authors don't really go into detail when it comes to all these mind control type of stories. Drugs are only a part of the battle, alright? You gotta have a bit of TECHNIQUE, too.

People just expect drugs to do all the work. I mean, as my uncle Leonard can tell you, addiction makes you suck dick in a Del Taco bathroom for a gram or two. So i guess its not entirely bullshit. But they aren't gonna be sleeper agent type of mind controlled. They'll just be rabid and crazy.
