What are some examples of the greatest dilemma that fiction characters had to face?

This is serious. I want examples for case study to construct my character and plot.

Dilemna? My favorite one is when a character needs to decide between their loved ones (family, lover, etc) and the fate of the entire world. And it's always interesting no matter which they choose. Said character who makes the decision may be a villain, a mentor, or a friend, or even the main character themselves.

Another interesting one is the decision between a risky, but potentially amazing choice, and a safe choice that requires moderate sacrifice. Like would you risk the lives of everyone you know, or choose to kill off just one tenth of them?

And I'll tell you a secret; it's the best when the result turns out BADLY.
