So I received a 1 star and worried I've written something unappealing. Well, I had a few good ratings and I'm just wanting to make sure it's not a writing issue and just a "don't like this" problem

Bear in mind this is my first light novel although I have written lots before. Also I'm a female writing from both perspectives, so I'm hoping I made the male lead have depth. Anyway, just looking for some constructive criticism. Thanks!

okay, Kuro. this may not be the warmest of welcomes this site has to offer but shit, welcome to scribblehub. this site allows for many forms of writing including but not limited to smut, loli, incest, western romance, eastern romance, Chinese romance, etc. this is one of our proudest pros and biggest selling point.

our main drawback, however, is the rampant, random 1-stars some stories would get.

yes, it has been a long-standing problem that new series (primarily those holding popular tags) will inevitably get one stars with next to no explanation whatsoever. our only theory is that there are people out there that are giving one stars out of spite, and nothing else. they do these things with no rhyme or reason because they're evil but not evil enough to fully commit to it. they couldn't bear to boil live kittens and roast their hamster pets so they resorted to making webnovel authors feel bad for half an hour by dropping the aforementioned one stars. i myself got 4 of them in a row and got so bad that it kicked my rating below the 3.5 figure. our site moderator/unpaid labour Tony has been working on this and have quelled what I estimate to be about 60% of the one star spamming. it's still happening, but not as bad as before. you should've seen our previous threads about this: they got so bad people came out malding with dried ovaries.

basically, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. this isn't an issue of your story's quality but rather, your luck. this happens so often that it's like a rainy day to the community. you have nothing to be afraid of, unless you're very adamant on keeping a good rating.

hope you have a great stay here in this hellish, butt-fucked site we call home. me casa u casa.

Thanks for the info! I didn't realize that would be a big issue but I'm glad I know now. It irked me to not know why I would get a 1 star without any explanation or comment. But I suppose that's my writer side coming out, which would prompt me to say why I gave such a low rating.
Anyways thanks for the heads up.

it's the same on royalroad tbh. got a couple of super low ratings over the past couple of days, kicked me down a lot. what can one do? just keep going, these people would love nothing more than to have someone quit because of their one click of a button

also, kuro, just look at statistics(sh allows to see the rating distribution unlike rr) even the most popular stories are usually 4.8 or so, because they have like 99% 5 and 4 stars, and at least one 1 star. Suspicious, eh? You'd think that if there should be some 2 and 3 stars as well, no, it's just 1.

that's how you know its not a sincere rating

Thing is the rating system is a complete copy of nu's. And let me tell ya something, nu's rating system sucks ass so hard it isnt even funny.
Add to that a decent number of binary voters, 5 or 1 and no in between, you get this outcome.

I'd say the binary nature of votes is due to the fact that nobody knows what a certain number of stars should mean or which factors should play into ones rating.
Additionally, people with "average" or "decent, but nothing special" impressions are less likely to leave a rating as they don't really care.
Then there are counter votes, where people strategically place their own rating to bring the average closer to what they consider appropriate.

You phrased this very poorly, as it sounds like whining. First of all, there are a few threads here on why people rate the novel 1 or 5 stars. And everyone has their own reasons, as there is no unified system. Secondly, there are a few threads that provide feedback. If you are afraid you wrote something poorly, you can always ask for feedback. Thirdly, you should understand that it's always a writing issue. There is no limit to perfection. Even if it's "don't like this" 1 star, it doesn't mean that there is nothing to improve in your writing. Moreso, every positive feedback is much more dangerous than a lot of 1-star ratings. Pride is a tricky thing. However, I won't spoon-feed you. If you do care for your writing, I believe you can find the threads I mentioned by yourself.

Thanks for the info. Didn't mean to come off as whiny! I was just hoping someone would read it and give feedback.
Also I agree. Always room for improvement.
I'll look for those threads; new here and to light novels in general.

Sorry you had to have such a welcome here. While I feel that the sudden 1 star voting (or the binary voting in general) is a thing, maybe there really was something you did to get someone mad. If it's a story twist, which it likely is, I'm afraid it falls into the category of "you can't please everyone and some people are just assholes."

However, I also take Sailus' stance that maybe there's something to improve. I'm not sure if I'm good enough as a writer to give feedback, but I could give this a shot since I see how much effort and care you put into your story with the cover, the pictures, and a quick glance at some of the chapters.

Problem is, I'm not a Dragon Ball fan at all, so do I need to understand the franchise in order to fully understand/appreciate the story? I can still give feedback regardless, but the lens I would be using would naturally be different.

Yes, you would likely need a working knowledge of both dragon ball as well as the video game XenoVerse 2 and Heroes, as well as Legends...

I do try to explain some things that wouldn't be obvious but otherwise I assume the reader has knowledge about the show and games.

Also you are so sweet and thank you so much! You're probably right that I made someone mad. Which, I don't mind doing as I know my story is definitely not for everyone (I mean the tags alone) but it does suck not knowing why the low rating. Which was why I came here to get feedback.

I'm always ready to improve and get better at my craft, and constantly going back and editing things as I notice.

Thank you for your kind input regardless. It makes me feel better knowing there are some like you here at scribble hub!

If anything, you also got a random 5 star review for nothing ?

It doesn't say anything in depth. Just a random 5 star as thanks, so I think it's as valid as the random 1s you get. And random 5s for no reason at all happen here, more often, I'd say. People are just binary in voting, as said in zirrboy's comment.

I always say that ratings /shouldn't/ matter because people can give random 5s and 1s out of a fit. But of course, it makes you feel better to see a high rating when you check your work. I know that feeling, so I won't discount that, too.

i'm of the opinon that raiting systems don't really help with anything as they are too simplistic to provide any useful feedback and easily influenced by personal bias to provide a good mesure of quality which makes me feel that any site would be better without them

I think you may be right. I feel like a person written review would be better than the rating system.

I like that idea, but not a lot of people would have the time or the motivation to do that though. I feel a lot of people would rather not rate at all if the ratings are review-locked, but I could be wrong.
