I'm too squeamish to put my characters through anything truly horrendous, so I don't think any of them would hate me at all.

This is just my opinion, but I sometimes wonder whether people make too big of a deal out of gender differences in writing. My approach has always been to treat my characters like believable people first and foremost, and whether they are male or female is secondary.
