I had read somewhere,
If the bodies are put in a River directly and are caged with a wood to keep them at one place
Then Algae or Fungi whatever gathers a layer on it
Removing oxygen and also prevents from further contact with air
This can be so good medieval method that people were found with the remains of food in their stomach that they ate before dying

:meowsip: You have college in India? That aside, the difference is probably rot and decay. Both are decomposition, but one is aerobe, the other anaerobe. In water, you usually get rot.
