They're always really miserable and bitter, and it gives me the impression that they don't like tragedy because they find it interesting, but rather because misery loves company.

They desire to make everyone who comes into contact with them, including fictional characters, miserable because seeing happiness reminds them of how unfulfilled with their lives they are, and blinding themselves to a happy ending is easier than improving their circumstances.
