It can feel kind of dirty sometimes, almost like manipulation, but at the same time a lot of it is simple psychology.

Humans ought to be defensive. We are social creatures, a false allegation that causes people to distance themselves from you could ruin your life.
SirContro

Damn it. I'm being defensive of humans being defensive. Clever ruse.

I never said we shouldn't, but this is primarily beneficial in a hostile environment. It causes a lot of issues, for example when interacting with people with significantly different worldviews, or with people (mainly in positions of power) who are liable to interpret advice as mockery, or doubts as accusations.

There is some historical evidence to the contrary. Jesters for example were the only people allowed to give rulers sound objective advice precisely because it was interpreted as mockery.

Looks somewhat random. Did another drama happen while I wasn't looking?

Point being that mockery can be a very valid tool in lowering someone's defenses if used right.
SirContro

Not really. Someone accidentally implied someone was a misogynist. Pretty tame for SHF, really.

@SirContro I meant that more in context of modern hierarchical systems, though it is related. This, however, is a way to circumvent a system. Why does the jester give good advice though, instead of advisors and experts? They have no agency, sure, but how would it look if some noble suddenly started advising the king how to manage a territory?

Thank you for this... I'll try and do what you suggest and honestly do understand (the human parts, not the communication. I am studying psychology after all). But I guess I don't know how to apply it online? I at least do not understand how I can present opinions on subjects without seeming accusatory. I will attempt to work on it, and will work to improve my online communication to an academic level.

I apologize for having you feel like you needed to write this. I will do my best to improve, I apologize if it happens again but will try my best to notice it proactively and change how I am saying things to be less harmful.

@SailusGebel Not quite drama, but there was a back-and-forth discussion. This here is as to why one side didn't want to accept the answer.

I don't want to overstay my welcome, but you did mention "whoever else is interested". I think what you say is right, at the same time overcomplicate things to an unnecessary degree.

@Omnii Nothing to apologize for, everyone's there at some point. I specifically wanted to talk about this because I got burned a couple of times in the past in nearly identical ways.

The king's inner circle has no fear of giving advice as that's why they're in his inner circle. What they fear is blatant disagreement for if they offend the king they risk to lose their status. The jester also loses everything if he offends the king, and risks to lose more as without that job he has nothing.

The jester however has wit and knows that if he disagrees with the king by mocking him, then the chances of losing everything is greatly lowered as his advice can just be seen as jokes.

I dislike psychology precisely because of how 'available' it has become. A lot of people will read books on it, study it on their own and so on. My sister is one of them. But what it does is it actually makes it harder to communicate a lot of the times. And even if you aren't into it, you are subjected to it via second hand sources.
RepresentingWrath

And it turns into a dance around problem instead of actually tackling it. Instead of communicating you think of how to communicate properly. Do you get what I mean here?
