@Sola-sama people complaint about anything nowadays,even if the game has little water background lol, diversity being the reason to hate or not play a game is funny.

Relating to the characters is not necessary, but it can help raise interest and a emotional investment for some.

Well, creators make it so as if 'relating to characters' is the sole reason games exist. And really, it affects the creation process of many developers, leading to the current gaming climate.

In their effort to be 'good,' they made it worse.

The advocacies they've been fighting for are being mocked and viewed in disdain nowadays. Moral of the story? Stay true to the roots, and never insert something else (like politics and racial issues), unless that's your creation's goal.

Heh, Red Alert 2 and Generals Zero Hour are a few examples of non-character specific games that gamers come to love.

I bet it's quite impossible to emotionally-relate to tanks and Kirov bombers, unless you think of yourself as those things. (Like me)

Left 4 Dead is another good example. Until L4D2, the character in the OG L4D had less developed backstories, yet players came to love the game.

I think games are even more for escapism than novels, manga, or movies. So you don't have to relate to characters. In fact, a lot of people do the opposite. For example, straight men like to play as women. Why? Cause women look beautiful in games. Well, not in every game, but you get what I mean.

And yes, not everyone wants to consume media meant to 'awaken' ideals. I know people who consciously avoid 'woke' stuff because, yes, they already know the issue. And yes, they can't be bothered to care, given that they have their own problems to solve, had long given up on that, or a combination of those.

I'd say, let them enjoy their lives. Let sleeping dogs lie.

I think another thing with games are, since you can't influence the story in one way or another, it makes it harder to relate to them. When you read a book, you resign that you can't change anything, and the way you approach them is different. In games, you CAN influence this or that, but because of limitations it doesn't always count.

Or there are simply no choices to relate to.

Well, I guess, in the end, the root cause of this issue is that they try to appeal to everyone to appear that their games are 'morally friendly'. Same thing can be said with ScribbleHub's Main page, where covers displaying skin tone colors are at risk to be rejected.

Problem with that is, morality differs in every person, and what is moral can also have different interpretations in every culture. It's just that, the West is too vocal about theirs, and would force everyone to follow them (on the pain of being cancelled). Messianic culture at its worse.

Add to the equation the young people who thinks they are making a difference by being ideological jackasses.

Well, in any case, I fully support the Chinese game peeps in their efforts to wean themselves off Western support. Blackrock and Sweet Baby Inc are curses that should be eliminated.
