@Anemic_Vampire As an old timer, I can certainly attest an evolution.

In the beginning times, when scribble was small and unknown, less skilled authors had much better chances. Stories made the cut there that wouldn't be as successful today in the cut throat environment with so much more competition by rivalling authors.
