yeah harem is tricky to get right

The only harem story that I actually liked was apothecary dairies. I really liked the first book of backyard dungeon but the love interests didn't seem to have a purpose much more than to gush over the MC.

That's because apothecary dairies isn't a harem story. It is a story set in the middle of harem.
