Well, most prejudices have a true core ... So, there might be something to it. Maybe it was part of the female etiquette further east ... Because smiling with eyes closed would have be unusual for a Western onlooker, so it would have easily sticked out.

Yep, there are like 2 people in my class who have this feature.
But the people in the mountain got this feature way more, probably 90% of them.

It might be because of the snow. The snow reflects the sun, blinding them. So, squinting might come more natural to them.
