You let your family/friends/co-workers/that guy down the street read your story or you don't because they might not understand

As a semi-closeted trans person, no, not generally. My family and closest friends know about my gender issues, but they're not interested in reading about it. My coworkers know that I enjoy writing, but I haven't told them what I like to write about.

Nothing stopping them. If they ask, then I tell them about it. As far as I am aware, nobody I personally know reads my story.

No, my family is not interested in my work. But I have been thinking about printing out some of my chapters into a zine with illustrations and dropping it off in random places.

The best part about not wanting to tell anyone is that they don't really care anyway.

I don't post anything I wouldn't want my mom to read.

My best friend does, others know but don't read, sometimes I ask my best friend to be a beta reader to tell me if it's any good or totally horrid.

One of two things will happen when you tell people you're an author.

1. "You wrote a book? That's awesome! What's it called? I'll read it sometime." *Immediately forgets this conversation happened* "You wrote a book? That's awesome!"

2. They actually read your book and start idolizing you because HOLY CRAP, YOU'RE AN AUTHOR, and obviously every author is like Stephen King or JK Rowling so you must be a famous celebrity, and they start following you everywhere, and bragging about how they know you, and you're an author, and they can't go five minutes without asking if you've written another book yet, and go away, go away, GO AWAY!

If you couldn't tell, the first option is better.

That’s impossible! Unless the author dreams it up in a dream. In reality, in 2026, absolutely nobody gives a damn about books!

I have a few hobbies and each one has introduced me to people I’ve met along the way. I don’t like shoving my interests in my irl friends’ faces, especially since I have so many of them.

I don't. Don't need them to.
I let some people I know read my stuff before it comes out here as beta-readers.
Then after finishing my editing process I release the chapters here, where anyone can read them.
If my family, or my friends, read them, great. If not, that's up to them. They know where they can find the stories.
