It has been the trend, take a well-known character, and change something about that character to try and pander to specific target audience.

Honestly, I can kind of see why. From a business standpoint, when you take an existing, popular character or franchise, you already have a fan base the moment you start making it, and it's much easier to market it. You also already have a lot of world building and characterization you can build on. Compared to making something original, it can be both cheaper and less risky, which is what investors care about most. Incidentally, it's also why fan fictions are so common.
There will never be a proper "Supergirl" movie unless a woman produces and directs it. Full stop.

I still fall over laughing at a "Simpsons" episode where Homer is on a sofa, eating peanuts, and one gets away from him and falls under the sofa. Homer feels around underneath and pulls out a $20 dollar bill.
Homer: "Twenty dollars?! Aww, I wanted a peanut."
Inside Homer's head: "Twenty dollars can buy many peanuts!"
Home: "Explain!"
Inside Homer's head: "Money can be exchanged for goods and services!"
Homer: "Woohoo!"
