I got a 404 error on my fanfic. I indicated that it was my work and that I was translating it from my native language. I'd been publishing this fanfic

Remove links, appeal, and hope Tony is merciful.
Thank you for another reminder, my dear friend. Now I just have to wait for a response from their great observing eye. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Having patreon links on FFs don't cause the story to be removed, only the links are deleted by automated system. The story was removed likely because it was translation. Yes, it's your novel and your translation of it, or so you say, but again automated systems are in place to remove translations. If you can send an email proving you are the writer it would likely be reinstated, as i have seen others in the same situation as you are who got their novel back. But, it might take a week or two, or maybe you will be lucky and it will be solved quickly, who knows. I know the situation sucks, but it is what it is.

Not if someone tries to hide those links. In those cases the story is taken down, as it is against the rules (or more like - trying to bypass automated checks) of monetizing fanfiction.

Is that really the case? As far as I can tell, there are hundreds of people who still have the link just separated with a _ or a @ that replaces the a. Someone even said he'll just bypass the system in the very same thread Toni announced the changes and justified it because he is in a bad financial situation. It's been quite a while, and nothing has been done, even to those openly posting the link in their Story summaries.

Obviously, one would assume that would be forbidden, from a logical standpoint at least.

However, Toni stated in his post that he just removed the donate button and removed links to PayPal/Patreon... maybe that's all he wants to do and is enough to cover his legal liablity? Seems to me he doesn't care at all and leaves it to the people on his platform. He just wants to cover and protect himself, which makes total sense to me.

The Donate button on Author profiles, even those who write Fanfics, is also still there, and since hundreds of people are doing it and Toni hasn't outright forbidden it, it looks like that isn't something Toni cares about or wants to prevent. If he really wanted to shut down any kind of Fanfiction monetization, that button obviously should have been removed. Since that is okay, I think people will also get away with P@treon Links.

Anyone who wants to support the author just needs to click on the profile, and the Tip Me Button will still lead directly to PayPal/Ko-Fi/Patreon.

Looks to me he just did that change with the links and the donate button to cover legal liabilities, and that's it. I mean, please tell me if I'm wrong. Personally, I have removed any kind of Patreon links because I don't want to go against the site rules, since I care more about writing for fun, and let's be honest, anyone who still wants to support me can easily Google it or click on the button on the profile.

That seems to be the case indeed.

The story in question was 99.9% taken down because it's a translation.

Well, I didn't know that. I'd been publishing chapters on this site for a year now, and I hadn't even thought about reading the site rules. I didn't even suspect such a rule existed.
Monetizing fanfictions is illegal. The site has to take them down so that the owners of the IP don't try to DMCA the site. Imagine the site shutting down for everyone because the people running the site wanted to accommodate people who break the law.

Right, someone could even simply post their discord, social media etc., to give other examples. Who is so jobless to waste time joining their discord or social media to monitor whatever they are doing? I'm not sure if FFs would be policed to such a high degree. So long as FF writers don't blatantly advertise it as providing advanced chapters for a price and whatnot on scribblehub, it logically shouldn't be a problem.

Which would remove any direct connection of liability to scribblehub, so from a legal point there would be no reason to put that much effort into a whack a mole hunt. No site can be expected to police the entire internet at large and whatever is going on beyond their purview. How could scribblehub be expected to monitor someone's social media profiles or discord server to see if they are breaking the law yea? That seems like it would be an absurd reach of liability.

Scribblehub just needs to show that the site is not allowing or facilitating monetization for FFs and taking reasonable action, but can't be expected to police what people do beyond. Even if someone is monetizing extra chapters somewhere on the internet, i don't see how this can be scribblehub's problem as there is nothing illegal going on here. All the FF chapters posted here are free, no one pays anything here.

So 404 means SH removed your work? I have 2 404'd works and they didn't break any rules I'm aware of. Why would there not be a notification at the very least?

How many times does it need to be said. Read the damn rules.
I have read the rules, and before I send this response, I'll read them again, just to be certain.

I just read the rules again. There's nothing explicitly relevant to what I said. Perhaps you replied to the wrong person? Or perhaps you thought I was asking why there aren't rules, when I was asking why there wouldn't be a notification about why a work is 404'd. I'm still not sure the 404 means it was removed by moderation, or if it's a bug, especially since the only thing people say aside from "read the rules" is "email the admin," and the response time is horrendous, possibly non-existent. I understand that Scribble Hub is apparently just one guy, so I'm not stabbing at them, but these are very simple questions that are apparently impossible to get answers to.

I will answer this for the last time.

Some time ago, all the translations were taken down in an event known as the "Great Rapture."

Why was your story taken down? It was either flagged as a translation, or you had a fanfic and tried to monetize it (with Patreon "hidden" in the text like p@treon//xxxxx).

Why was it taken down without notice? Because that is what the rules say. Works that are against the rules are taken down without any notice.

What can you do? Email the admin and have patience. Tony is a reasonable guy. If you really did nothing wrong, your fic will be back in time. Do note that Tony is a one-man army.

If you fucked up, take the L and learn from it for next time.

I don't write fan fic, I have never translated anything, and I've never put a Patreon link in a chapter. I've also only been writing online for about 52 days, so I'm assuming this rapture event preceded my arrival here. I'll just assume that it's common knowledge that 404 means it was removed purposely. Thank you for your response, but do keep in mind that not everyone has been around for that long. You answering this for "the last time" is greatly appreciated, but from my perspective, it's the one and only time this information has been offered. Even when I searched 404 on the forums a couple days ago, the context was too irrelevant and too vague to answer my specific questions. Thanks again, Nap.

There seems to be someone witch-hunting anything that may seem ai, or there's a bot flagging random stories. There have been multiple people who got flagged for no reason

These guys thought you were suspicious on the megathread for translation hunting... so maybe ask them to clear misunderstandings or something.

I still stand with my statement that missing quotation marks are pissing me off. It’s part of the English grammar, and when OPs original language doesn’t have quotation marks, but still wants to publish in English, then adjust it according to English rules. It’s weird and confusing to read.

I didn’t report it but I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone did. Also making us forum users change our opinion doesn’t make a change as only admin can do something.

Well, there have always been and always will be such rats, and it doesn't surprise me at all. There will always be someone mentally retarded who just wants to complain. And they always write the same thing. I think... That everything should be this way and that way. And you write differently than I want... You do things differently than I see... And so on.
