Many people release chapters between 1k and 5k words.
Personally, I have to admit I just aim for 1.5k to 2k.

Anyway, I believe there are multiple valid arguments to be made for how long chapters should be, and this suggestion isn't about that. However, I think anyone can understand that there needs to be a certain standard for our site.

Do we accept microchapters, which can be read in 15 seconds? Do we accept spam? Do we accept ads disguised as chapters?

There are people abusing the system by just creating "chapters" with a couple of hundred words, sometimes even just 1 sentence (to have their chapters pushed).

My suggestion is the following: Require new chapters to have at least 500 (I'd say 1k, but for now 500 would be an improvement) words to appear on the front page.
Any kind of trickery (like repeating the chapter or creating additional spam to reach the wordcount) should, of course, be forbidden.

If people still argue that they have an urgent reason to create 200-word chapters, then they shouldn't complain about the lack of visibility.

I can see chapters for a story being submitted without any actual story in it being policed in the future, but trying to impose word count requirements is a bad idea overall. It's easy to cheat and wouldn't deter anyone at all.

And totally not feeling called out since some of my zombie diary story has a handful of like 350-400 word chapters. :blob_pout:

Aside from the porn... You kinda pointed out exactly what multiple people said.

This guy's chapters are half chapter and half Patreon promotion/link/summary.

So I guess it would be difficult to implement a system that prevents that, and using manual reports would require multiple people who do nothing but check stories every day.

I guess it can't be automated at this point... still, it's kinda. rough. I still believe that this issue needs to be addressed, but maybe not at this point. Guess you either refuse to play the game, or you play it and profit.

Those things are against the Content Guidelines and should be reported. Did so just now.
So it kinda doesn't count as an argument here.

Eh, I don't see any reason to not allow this. I mean, if the late Peter A. David could pull off a chapter that was nothing more than a chapter title and: "It seemed the polite thing to do at the time." in his novel Howling Mad, I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed occasionally. Maybe give a warning that the chapter is dangerously short and set a flag that gets "upset" after three violations in 30 days or something, but outright banning? Nah.

Who wants to outright ban it?

You are the third person misstating me. I am merely talking about visibility on the front page. I fully agree with you. Banning something is nearly always a dumb idea.

I don't care what people do... their stories, their decisions. Let them write 5-word chapters... or a 1-letter chapter. Who cares?

I just think a one-liner and, honestly 2 paragraph chapters don't deserve the front-page bump.

Show a way to code this without outright banning it and I'll support your suggestion. But I don't think this is an easy thing - more effective would be to issue a warning each time a chapter is below a certain size, and have the warnings expire after seven or ten days. Collect three or more warnings, and you are excluded from both newest updates and Trending until the last warning expires. Which would be a pain but I think less of one than just blocking such chapters from being "counted"

No author can release 2 chapters a day over a longer period of time. Why should people get 2 front page slots a day for 2 x 200-word chapters, when someone else who delivers one 5k-word chapter a week only gets 1/14 of that?
I more or less agree with you.
But I have to point it out.
The "system" rewards the shorter chapters.
The "system" disadvantages longer chapters.
The fact this system was not designed explicitly, in no way obviates this simple glaring fact.
Its to the point now that people spout rules/guidelines declaring chapter length recommendations.
I used to write 10k chapters, before I discovered the WN world.
its fine and dandy for paperback format.
I shortened it to 5k, and that's still some upper limit on what people will tolerate.

you (the system, whatever) has t-r-a-i-n-e-d people.
that you get exposure for limiting the chapter length.

why not *reward* or at least compensate, longer chapters.

1k chapter? you get one run down the new chapter release.
2k? you get a second day, the same running down. a second pass, as if you released another chapter.
5k? you can release one chapter every five days, and you get the compensated exposure, as the person cranking out 1k chaps.

I'm considering chopping my "1,000,000+ word story" I have?
into 1k "chapters" instead of the 3-6k I am using right now.

I'm just pointing out, they you created this system intentionally or unintentionally.
and going 500 words a chapter? was a logical outgrowth of the reward system.
views, come from visibility, getting to run down the new chapter list.
views, drive the RANKINGS when you see how you are performing in a particular tag.
the system unfairly rewards shorter and shorter chapters,
and discriminates even if unintentionally, proportionately against increasing chapter length.

Man, some people will just do about anything other than write for the love of the game. Am I the only one that doesn't check the word count until I'm done?

Anyway, you figure this issue would fix itself. If people don't like super short chapter spam, then you'd think they would read those stories less, but I have no idea how the algorithm works.

Every author has the right to write short chapter, even for shitposting.

If you want to have the minimum word requirement, why not also have a maximum word requirement? i am sure both limit would have their pro and con, which should be equal either way. Having reward / punishment on word count is stupid, just take a look at chinese webnovel that reward high word count, do you really want more slop chapter without anything meaningfull happening in it? If you dont want novels where 70% of its content is just filler nonsense without any meaning, dont normalise rewarding / punishing novel with specific word count.

Some author write short chapter as a way to announce something, why would the site "shadow ban" it just because it is less than 200 word? the whole purpose of writing it is so people would know about it, because, you know, it is an announcement. If only there is a better way for author (or this site itself) to announce something, so reader wont get confused and can only ask around on forum.

There might be also just how the author write their story, lets say a diary format, report, or something else.
Maybe there is an author that write story about alchemist trying to turn his daughter into dog on a short report format, who knows.

... I finally succeed! The subject is stable, but restless, I have to add 30 ml more drugs to keep it calm. I should remove its vocal cord tomorrow, it is getting annoying to always hear its scream during the procedure.
or something like that.

If they write shity short chapter, the author would be the one who suffer from losing reader anyway. But punishing them for it by not showing them on the frontpage is stupid.

Dont limit creativity.
Limit / Constraint do make people more creative, but why would you put a constraint just because you want to have more exposure?

Even if you are not shown up on the recommended list or something, if your story is good people will find it anyway.
Just write good story, thats it.

Honestly there are alot of interesting things that can be done by utilising few word count... oh well, i am just a reader, not an author, so what would i know anyway.

Sorry if my post seems aggresive, but this stupid shit is just feels so annoying to me somehow, maybe because i drank too much coffee this morning.
