Interesting Ideas are a dime a dozen. What matters the most is execution. How will you make this something worth reading? How will the character draw us in? What can we relate to? Stuff like that is what matters more than the idea itself. I've read plenty of books that had me going, "Cool idea"...

Yeah, very well could be. They took the mentor even further with the AI, or game system helping out the different characters in different Manga/Anime.

At least with Western stories, you see a lot of mentorship. I think thats the most common one. The wise mentor trope is popular and makes it easy for the MC to learn whatever it is he wants to gain skill with. The mentor usually dies or goes missing, which give the MC some sort of direction to...

Lots of great titles on here. My main character in Rigor Mortis is inspired by Guts, but with his own twists. Had to really narrow down this list to just 4 titles, it was hard.

I think the only way it would be Fanfic is if you were using a historical character made up by someone in the past, i.e. Frankenstein, Dracula, Bible characters, Grimm fariytales, the Canterbury tales, and such. Otherwise, it's just a historical fiction.
