I'm too squeamish to put my characters through anything truly horrendous, so I don't think any of them would hate me at all.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I especially like the idea about the magic; it's forcing me to realize that I should really put some more work into my magic worldbuilding.

This is just my opinion, but I sometimes wonder whether people make too big of a deal out of gender differences in writing. My approach has always been to treat my characters like believable people first and foremost, and whether they are male or female is secondary.
