If you're trying to replicate the style of the references you gave earlier, it looks like they have a pretty plain base color airbrushed on, then draw over it with a pure black hard round brush and other details with that brush. It doesn't look like there's much, if any smudge used there.

It reminds me of traditional ink drawings, you might be able to use some of that kind of thing for reference.
